Understanding Canine Behavior
|
|
For many years dog owners and trainers did not consider it important to understand why dogs behaved as they did, or how they learned. There was no such thing as a “behaviorist,” and especially not for dogs! But as our knowledge of human behavior increased, much of it carried over to our understanding of our canine companions. We began to see the importance of genetics and evolution, and to realize that dogs were capable of a great deal of rather complicated learning if it was presented appropriately. Over time we’ve learned that dogs are capable of communicating extensively, both with us, their human companions, and with other dogs. But we need to learn a whole new language so we can “explain” to dogs what it is we expect of them, and before we can understand their thoughts and emotions.
