Expanded Description:

"Twelve Months, Four Dogs, and Me." When the author's two yellow Labs were 6 and 7 years old, a breeder who had read one of his books contacted him to say that she had a dog that was meant for him - a two-year-old Border Collie named Devon, well bred but high strung and homeless. Instinct over-ruled reason, and he brought Devon home. This is the story of how Jon and Devon and the two Labs came to terms with each other. It shows how a man discovered a lot about himself through one dog whose temperament seemed as different from his own as night is from day. Jon is forced to deal with all the issues that may come with a re-homed dog who is at best high strung. A Border Collie book that fully explores the temperament of the breed and the issues involved in rescue.

What a great story! I couldn't put this book down and I don't usually like reading. It's a very easy book to read and it goes fast. The author does a wonderful job of describing things. I have 5 or 6 people I plan to pass this book on to because I know they will all enjoy it.

I was willing to give the author a great deal of latitude, since he came from labs to border collies, with no idea of the jump he had made. This book begins with a rescue BC, with common rescue 'issues', motion, socialization, control. The author starts out as a borderline abusive owner,(serious anger-management issues) and seems to find his way to 'natural' solutions with his rescue BC. Herding, returning to his 'roots' is supposed to 'fix' this socially challenged BC.
Note to rescuers: sometimes it is not possible to 'fix' socialization issues down the road, once the socialization period has closed. Mr. Katz went through the motions with Devon, but ended up putting him in social pressure, and rationalizing a bunch of nonsense about what was 'fair' to the dog, considering all the 'benefits' he had been given. Sometimes, putting management(a fence) in place is better than blaming the dog for behavior he can't change. This does not have a good ending!! Returning an animal to the rescue organization is better than taking the 'ultimate option'. I was very uncomfortable with the rescue worker who placed the BC in this home, and after this first book, I would have driven to Pa. or wherever and picked up the dog to re-home him with someone who had a clue. I gave away this whole series of books! I want nothing to do with John Katz, he needs to go back to Labs and leave Border Collies alone!!!
