Expanded Description:

An adventure with sixteen sheep, three dogs, two donkeys, and a man! Recounts the first winter the author spent on a remote, windswept hillside farm in upstate New York with a few life-saving friends, ugly ghosts from the past, and more livestock than any novice should attempt to manage. It's also the story of how the dogs forced him to confront his sense of humanity, and how he learned the places a dog could lead him and the ways a dog could change him.

Fantasy Farm, August 9, 2008
Reviewer: Valerie Vale
The owner of a rescue BC slips into a fantasy of owning a sheep farm that will rehabilitate his socially-challenged dog, and teach him life lessons. Unfortunately, Orson lacks herding skills(we have to assume, since our info comes from the author) and he purchases a 'real' herding dog to do the farm work. As a working sheep farm owner, I do relate to some of his colorful episodes of sheep farming. However, it does not mitigate the fact that Devon is still being exposed to social pressures (FedEX and UPS drivers) coming into his yard, and Jon does decide to re-home one of his BCs, who seems to be at the bottom of the social order. Loving a dog is not enough to ensure quality of life, as this book points out. Not understanding the 'issues' can be costly, though we all have to be grateful that the author found it to be a 'growth' experince. Hurrah. He ends up putting Devon down, which angers me to this day. There are some people who are not meant to own Border Collies. This would be one of those!!!
How arrogant to believe they are here only to enhance our experience!! Someone, please refuse to give him another sensitive dog....I live with BCs, and can't believe he managed to obtain one, with all his 'personal' issues...

This is a great book that really describes the many joys of living with dogs! If you have Border Collies, or any herding breed, really, you will especially be able to relate to the writer's dogs! It will make you laugh, smile, and maybe even cry at times! He is a wonderful, descriptive, thought-provoking author as well!
