| On the Labrador Breeder’s Handbook by Debby Kay, this book is a must have for all individuals, whether a novice or a seasoned veteran, involved in the Labrador breed. The book covers topics ranging from linebreeding, retaining desirable characteristics, deciphering pedigrees, genetics, hip dysplasia, and congenital and inheritable disorders. I feel the chapter on disorders is an invaluable tool for all Labrador owners, whether professionals or pet owners, and it should be mandatory reading for any individual contemplating breeding a litter. As for the chapters covering genetics, as many know, this is not an easy subject, but don’t let that scare you away. The author provides case histories accompanied by easy-to-read charts and tables, and gives clear and concise explanations of the topics covered. Though the book was written with the Labrador breed in mind, the chapters regarding linebreeding, pedigrees, and retaining desirable characteristics are easily applied to other dog breeds. The Labrador Breeder’s Handbook is very strongly recommended by this reviewer and will quickly become a key reference source in your dog library. |
