| Yorkshire Terrier, August 9, 2011 |
| Reviewer: Debra Eldredge |
Another in the TFH series of breed books is Yorkshire Terrier by Sandy Bergstrom Mesmer. This is part of the Dogs 101 series co-sponsored with Animal Planet. The goal is a quick reference for anyone interested in the breed or who has recently added a dog of that breed to their family. The information is relevant to anyone with a new puppy, rescue dog, shelter adoptee or rehome.
Sandy Mesmer is currently best known for her Tessier Silky Terriers, but her 'dog career' started out with a cute Yorkshire Terrier named Robbie. She is also well known for her artwork and her small dog blog and newsletter.
This book is full of useful and fun information. In Yorkie origins, you learn that Yorkies were some of the little dogs who had to pass under a 7 inch hoop in order to remain as part of a peasant family in early England. The Waterside, Paisley and Clydesdale Terriers were all part of the background blend that went into creating the Yorkshire Terrier.
The Characteristics chapter tells you about Yorkies both physically and mentally. They are true 'terriers' even if they are small and cute! Supplies and feeding are very important, especially if you have never had a truly small dog. Issues like hypoglycemia are very important with the Toy breeds but rarely matter with large sporting or working dogs.
The grooming chapter is extensive and takes you from head to tail over your Yorkie. My one concern here is that the emphasis is on keeping your Yorkie in full show length coat. Ms. Mesmer has more faith in the average pet family than I do - virtually all Yorkies I know who aren't actively showing in conformation, have a short puppy type clip. Certainly for performance it makes more sense. Still, if you are game to do the work, the directions for brushing, bathing, trimming, detangling, etc are complete and comprehensive.
This is not intended as a definitive work on the Yorkshire Terrier but the Health and Training chapters cover important topics. Under Solving Problems, I was glad to see housebreaking issues and jumping up covered with sound, practical advice.
I feel this book would be an excellent puppy shower gift for someone with a new Yorkie puppy or who has recently adopted a rescue or rehome Yorkie. The hard cover makes it sturdy but the ring binder format make sit easy to lay down to quick look up sections you need. |
