Explains why many vets caution against raw diets, May 3, 2007
Reviewer: Ann Dupuis / Your Dream Dog
Raw meat diets for dogs (and cats) have gained popularity in recent years. But most veterinarians strongly caution their clients against feeding their pets raw meat (due to concerns about bacteria such as e. Coli and Salmonella and parasites that are destroyed when meat is properly cooked) and especially raw bones (injuries ranging from fractured teeth to perforations of the intestines are seen far too often in veterinary clinics). In this book, James O’Heare reviews and summarizes the scientific literature on raw meat diets and the potential problems inherent in feeding raw meats. Unfortunately, there’s no corresponding information on the potential benefits of feeding a raw diet – simply because scientific studies of that side of the equation are very hard to find. In my opinion, anyone feeding or thinking about feeding a raw meat diet to their dogs or cats should read this book to educate themselves of the potential risks involved and be better able to weigh those risks against the benefits proponents of raw meat diets maintain.

Objective? Hardly!, October 12, 2006
Reviewer: Cheri Mumford
To quote from the preface of this book 'I decided to explore the topic and present my findings as critically and objectively as I could so that others could benefit from a less biased standpoint on the issue.' One only needs to spend a few minutes on the internet to see that Mr. O'Heare is he himself a vegan as well as being a HUGE PROPONENT OF VEGAN DIETS FOR DOGS AND CATS. While I respect Mr. O'Heare on the decision he has made for himself, not feeding meat to dogs (carnivorous omnivores) and cats (obligate carnivores) is an idea based in emotion, not sound science. If dogs and cats could thrive as vegans or even vegetarians, common sense tells us that they would have eons ago, and their physiology today would be very different. He says of his education in nutritional sciences-- 'not extensive.' That much is very clear on so many levels, throughout this book. Mr. O'Heare states in the last sentence of the preface, '...it is morally wrong in my evaluation to use animals as a means to our ends.' Isn't that exactly what Mr. O'Heare is doing by encouraging us to force our dogs and cats to go completely against their evolution and nature and never feed them meat?
I was so excited to finally find an objective book on feeding raw diets to companion animals; this book does not deliver. I will have to keep looking. In my opinion, this book represents an alarming lack of integrity. He claims to be 'objective', but obviously has a hidden agenda. |
