| Begging for Trouble, April 13, 2011 |
| Reviewer: Debra Eldredge |
Begging for Trouble is the latest in Judi McCoy's series of Dog Walker Mysteries. The series features Ellie Engleman as an upscale dog walker - only of pint size pooches however - and her Yorkie Poo companion, Rudy in New York City.
Judi's cast of characters covers Ellie's friends, family, romance hopeful detective and of course, the canines she walks and their owners. NYC is full of colorful personalities and Ms McCoy makes the most of them. In addition, Ellie can 'talk' with dogs so you get multiple outlooks on events from both human and perspectives.
This is the fourth book in the series and by now most readers know the cast of main characters well. Still, the writing flows smoothly even if you are new to the series. Ellie takes her detective buddy Sam with her to the new revue of a cross dressing client, Rob. In between scenes a blood curdling scream leads Sam, and Ellie, an incorrigible snoop, backstage to find Rob with bloody scissors in his hand and a dead performer on the floor. Rob says he just walked in on the scene so the only real witness is Rob's Poodle/Chihuahua , Bitsy who was in her crate under a table.

Sam of course assumes Rob is the killer while Ellie and pooch Rudy are determined to clear Rob's name for Bitsy's sake if nothing else. I won't destroy the story for you, but there are many twists and turns to follow. Naturally Sam resents Ellie getting involved in police matters while Ellie figures Sam isn't looking at the big picture and at all possible suspects.
Occasional dog references are a bit off. For example, I think most hard core dog fanciers would refer to Bitsy as a PooChi not a poohuahua. But those are minor glitches that don't really detract from this fun read. The characters - both human and canine - are fun, the setting classic NYC and the story complicated enough to keep you guessing. An intriguing mysetery, light romance and dogs - what more could you want?
Publisher is Penguin Group through Obsidian. For $6.99, this is definitely an inexpensive and nice source of entertainment. |
