Just plain good reading!, December 11, 2008
Reviewer: Brenda Cox
I am not at this time in a position to adopt a dog but if I am I will be sure to re-read this book. I am a dog savy owner who trains in various dog sports. I have been around a variety of dog types and breeds. Even so I learned alot from this book.
A shelter insider has much to learn from this book. And those of us who admire the dedication of shelter volunteers from the 'outside' gets a fascinating glimpse into that world. A mundane chapter title such as 'Where do I go for my dog' does not even begin to display the interesting information contained within. Like 'regional differences in shelter dogs'and 'attitudes about rescued dogs.' The chapter 'What am I Really looking for' is FULL of interesting information. And I haven't even got to other compelling parts such as 'What have I done?' 'Basic Manners' 'Where all else fails?' and 'Adding another dog.'
The easy going writing style of the book is chock full of anecdotes to flesh out each point she makes. And she does what all good non fiction writers do, gives us glimpses into her own personality even while writing about another subject.
I recomend this book highly.

great for owners, shelters and trainers, September 14, 2006

I love that book. It really describes in words what I had difficulty to explain: what makes a dog's appearence safe -social and what turns warnings in my head. Sue really is able to give this great description what to look for in a dog, what is the most important. Just for that the book is worth reading. She really knows shelters and all what she writes is very accurate.
