| a good introduction to dogs, January 14, 2008 |
| Reviewer: Vicky Hagemeister |
The Howell Book of Dogs would make a fine addition to the library of someone just starting out in dogs. The book opens with chapters on topics such as selecting and living with a dog, feeding and grooming a dog and how to train your dog. The training section does not emphasize any training approach over any other and strives for a balanced, non-judgemental approach, but the specific how-to instructions use lure and reward training.
The great strength of the book is in the breed descriptions. Because the book covers many unfamiliar breeds, this part of the book would be useful for professional dog trainers looking for info on a new client. Each breed gets one to two pages of description and a color photograph. The text notes exercise needs, ease or difficulty of training and grooming, the origins and uses of the breed, a description of the temperament and type of home the breed needs.
Anyone looking for a single volume on dogs would be well served by this book. |
