Expanded Description:
In the wake of the Oklahoma City bombing, Susannah Charleson clipped a photo from the newspaper: an exhausted canine handler, face buried in the fur of his search-and-rescue dog. A dog lover and pilot with search experience herself, Susannah was so moved by the image that she decided to volunteer with a local canine team and soon discovered firsthand the long hours, nonexistent pay, and often heart-wrenching results they face.
Still she felt the call, and once she qualified to train a dog of her own, she adopted Puzzle, a strong, bright Golden Retriever puppy who exhibited unique aptitudes as a working dog, but who was less interested in the role of compliant house pet. Puzzle's willfulness and high drive, both assets in the field, challenged even Susannah, who had raised dogs for years.
"Scent of the Missing" is the story of Susannah and Puzzle's adventures together, and of the close relationship they forge as they search for the lost - a teen gone missing, an Alzheimer's patient wandering in the cold, signs of the crew amid the debris of the space shuttle "Columbia" disaster. From the earliest air-scent lessons to her final mastery of whole-body dialog, Puzzle emerges as a fully collaborative partner in a noble enterprise that unfolds across the forests, plains, and cityscapes of the Southwest. Along the way Susannah and Puzzle learn to read the clues in the field, and in each other, to accomplish together the critical work neither could do alone, and to unravel the mystery of the human/canine bond.

| Puzzle is an endearing main dog!, December 1, 2012 |
| Reviewer: Victoria Booth |
This was a fascinating peek at what it's like to train and own a search-and-rescue (SAR) dog, and quite the wild ride.
When we begin, the author does not have a SAR dog of her own, but is associated with an organization. She decides she is ready to raise a puppy, and thus begins her relationship with her golden retriever, Puzzle. Puzzle is a handful, not really interested partnering, and at first does not get along with her other dogs.
Slowly they grow to have an understanding, if a painful one, as seen by Puzzle whacking her in the face with a shoe to wake her up and let her out in the mornings.
This is a very nice book, my only reason for 4 stars is that the direction the book is taking is not always clear, and the thoughts can be a bit scattered, going back and forth not having a clear 'present time'.
A very intriguing dog book for sure. |

| Susannah Had Me At Page 1!, January 30, 2011 |
| Reviewer: Connie O'Hara |
I picked up this book because it had a dog on it and promised to be a story that was about a working dog. Several working dogs. And, it was written by a woman who's relationship to her dogs is clear...pure bliss.
If you have any interest in dogs, in the amazing feats they accomplish, and the bond with their humans, this book will have you at page one. Ms. Charleson's writing reads like a novel, while the description of her journey puts you right there with her, the dogs she came to know, and the raising, training and partnership with her first SAR dog.
Read it because it will make you feel good. Read it because you will be drawn into the work and dedication of human and canine partnership. Read it! |

| AWESOME Book, December 23, 2010 |
| Reviewer: Karen Moulton |
I love this book! As a former SAR dog handler who started my late Golden on SAR work at 10 weeks old, I love this book! The book is wonderfully written and describes so much of what I experienced workinng with my late Golden Sienna. As I read about Puzzle and Susannah, it brought back a flood of memories and emotions of how much I learned from my dog and what a great partnership we had.
She has written a book that illustrates what it is like to drive miles in the middle of the night only to stand down as you arrive. To not have a clear resolution to a search. To find personal effects and remains of people and how it impacts both handlers and dogs. She does not make herself out to be a hero - she is humble as she does her work and writes about it.
A great book - so glad to have found it, I have the last chapter to read and don't want to read it because I don't want this book to end. Would love to read more! |
