Expanded Description:
Distance work is a key element of success in any agility venue. While it is critical preparation for Gamblers classes, you cannot run your dog in the upper levels of the Standard and Jumpers classes in any venue if you and your dog are joined at the hip. The ability for the handler and dog to work at a distance apart benefits the agility team in a variety of ways:
*You will be able to send the dog ahead to perform long sequences while you take the shorter, more direct route.
*You will be able to layer obstacles.
*You will be able to trust your dog to perform complex obstacles accurately and reliably even if you're not right at his side.
The key ingredients in the recipe for successful distance work are experience and confidence. All exercises in this DVD begin with you handling at a modest distance, gradually adding distance over time as the dog becomes comfortable and reliable at each stage. The exercises can be tailored to any level of dog.

Short on Basic Instruction, June 11, 2008
Reviewer: Regina Allen DVM
I was disappointed with this video. It has some great exercises, but it doesn't actually tell you how to teach them if your dog lacks basic skills. For instance, there is an exercise with a 90 degree turn into the weaves, but it offers no instruction on how to teach your dog to find weave entrances. The only instruction on what to do when your dog can't complete an exercise is to 'split the distance with the level where the dog was last successful.' I also don't like the 180 turn exercise, as it encourages your dog to backjump. I did like the pillbug exercise, as that actually could guide/teach a less confident dog to find and complete jumps at a distance. Overall, this video has some good practice exercises for experienced dogs, but is less useful for beginners looking to teach independent obstacle skills at a distance.

Great Intermediate Video, February 7, 2008
Reviewer: Kristen Nelson
This DVD is great for the intermediate handler wanting to build good distance handling skills, but who has limited access to coaching. In my case, it's exactly what I needed.
I've been working on my dog's foundation skills for independant obstacle execution, and need help incorporating distance, and I honestly didn't know where to start. This video includes many exercises that I can use to develop a nice foundation for distance. Bear in mind that this is not a step-by step video, just a skeleton of great exercises. It's a lot of conceptual information, but short on detail. If you aren't solid with your ability to figure out your dog's step one, and how to gradually take him to step ten, then you're not ready for this DVD. If you're past the basics this DVD is a great value. |
