Distance work is a key element of success in any agility venue. While it is critical preparation for Gamblers classes, you cannot run your dog in the upper levels of the Standard and Jumpers classes in any venue if you and your dog are joined at the hip. The ability for the handler and dog to work at a distance apart benefits the agility team in a variety of ways:
*You will be able to send the dog ahead to perform long sequences while you take the shorter, more direct route.
*You will be able to layer obstacles.
*You will be able to trust your dog to perform complex obstacles accurately and reliably even if you're not right at his side.
The key ingredients in the recipe for successful distance work are experience and confidence.
