Dogs with issues are as misunderstood as they are loved. Lynn Hoover has put together a collection of case studies, information and proven strategies to help dogs. Families everywhere can learn how to manage and modify problem behaviors while increasing their understanding of dog's unique emotional and relationship needs. Dog trainers and behaviorists will be amazed by the simple but innovative strategies that Hoover provides in this book.
Hoover wants to reduce the number of companion dogs that are inappropriately punished, discarded and euthanized for behavior problems that are resolvable. Her book will benefit anyone who wants to help a dog with issues, from hyperactivity to inappropriate elimination, separation anxiety, and aggression.
WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING…
"Lynn Hoover's insights and her recommendations for managing canine behaviors are based squarely on scientific research, loving observation, and a joyful appreciation of dogs and the bonds between our two species. If you want to live happily ever after with your dog, read Dog Quirks." - Sheila Webster Boneham, PhD, author of Rescue Matters! How to Find, Foster, and Rehome Companion Animals
I really like Lynn Hoover’s approach and common sense ideas in this book, and her use of case studies to make her points. I think readers will get a lot out of seeing examples of the points she is making about real-life situations…Lynn really gets to the heart of recognizing behavior problems as miscommunication between the species…”
- John Ciribassi, DVM, Dipl. ACVB Chicagoland Veterinary Behavior Consultants
Lots of practical advice and methods for solving dog behavior problems. This book is especially recommended for people who work with dog behavior problems that are caused by either separation anxiety or fear. -Temple Grandin, PhD Author of Animals in Translation, and Animals Make us Human
I really like the book and want people to read it. Lynn Hoover is a fine writer. Her work always has an immediacy and personalism so the reader feels they’re right there in the room. I love Section Two, “All That Matters”. So much wisdom and insight in those chapters. I like the “Case Studies” a lot. Lynn opens a window for the reader into her philosophy, methodology, and style. I like the idea of the “Behavior Cache” --- brief essays on assorted important but often little-discussed topics, along with excellent references for readers who want to know more.-Dani Weinberg, Ph.D. Dogs & Their People Albuquerque, NM
Karen Pryor Academy Faculty Author of Teaching People Teaching Dogs
Reading this book was like sitting down with a dear friend. The advice is genuine and after completing it, you feel sad that it’s over...The true measure of a book’s worth is, simply, did it make you think after reading it. Lynn makes one think, and it has not been since Clothier’s Bones that I was moved by case studies. Great job, Lynn. - Carol Stewart, MA, CPDT Certified Pet Dog Trainer Greensburg, PA
Lynn's explanations of dog behavior and solutions in the "Case Histories" section are an education for anyone looking for realistic and reliable solutions for "dog quirks", as she so charmingly categorizes dog problems. It is wonderful to have someone with Lynn's insight to guide us.
I love this book. It will have a prominent place on my bookshelf - to be used as reference, inspiration and to be lent to those whom I am certain will return it to me! Lynn tackles tough subjects that face animal professionals in current times and does so in a logical and professional manner, with honesty. Her message of a professional attitude, tolerance and ethics is an important one. - Brenda Aloff,Midland, MI - Author of Aggression in Dogs, Canine Body Language and Get Connected with Your Dog.

| Empathetic and Professional, February 11, 2011 |
| Reviewer: Beth Holshoe |
I was quite taken how Dog Quirks brings a fun, fresh approach to helping family dogs. Lynn Hoover often strays away from or modifies conventional wisdom as she takes into account every aspect of both families and dogs involved. Lynn's empathy and professionalism are clear in the case studies.
This book is an excellent reference for people helping dogs everywhere. |

| Exceptional, Radiates Love for Dogs & Their People, November 17, 2010 |
| Reviewer: Rachel Smith |
Every once in a while a book comes along that changes how we think about things. Dog Quirks is just such a book. Hoover's explanations and recommendations make perfect sense, as in 'why didn't we think of that before?!' She shows us how to figure out what's wrong with our dogs with behavior problems, and what's out of balance in our relationships with them. She shows us what dogs need from us and offers simple solutions to problems she wants us to think about, paradoxically, in a complex way.
There's nothing trite about Dog Quirks. It's philosophical, the case studies are moving, and she makes strong statements about dogs with behavior problems and their families. At it's heart, Dog Quirks is there to help us help the dogs we love. It radiates helpfulness and love for dogs and their people. |

| Destined to Be a Classic, October 21, 2010 |
| Reviewer: Pat Jenkins |
Dog Quirks is original, amazing, destined to be a classic. I've seen other authors blend theory with clinical practice issues and this book gets it right. The second section, All That Matters, is particularly well-done. The issues covered are familiar to all the helping professions. I've not seen them laid out with such clarity before. I’m in a helping profession and this section had me appreciating anew why our fundamental values and principles have to be upheld. I found myself saying yes, yes, yes! The author nailed it. Even better, the cases are a beautiful mix of simple to complex, to help readers with different levels of education benefit from the book. The interventions are simple, though as the author says, we have to understand our dogs first, before we can select the right combination of interventions.
I especially appreciate that the author doesn't let the reader slip into emotionality over issues that must be viewed objectively, such as electronic collars, choke and prong collars, alpha rolls, squirt bottles. Her family therapy training serves her well in this regard.
It's good to see it getting the recognition it deserves and already helping families in the U.S. and throughout the world. |
