So here you are, right next to a new dog who just entered the house, and whose life history you know little or nothing about. Now what? How do you welcome an adult or adolescent dog into your home and incorporate this new individual into your family? This booklet is designed to help you ease the transition from "new dog" to "family member" by guiding you through the first steps of this new relationship.

Love Has No Age Limit includes information on what to do as you enter the house, how to handle the first few days, what to do and what not to do as you get to know each other, and tips on everything from the car ride home to the first vet visit. It includes advice on training and a section on solving common behavioral problems to helps prevent the most frequent dilemmas that people encounter when adopting a new dog.

They say, you can't judge a book by its cover but as soon as I saw the dear old dog on the cover of Patricia McConnell and Karen London's Love Has No Age Limit, I just knew I would love the book. And I do. Yet another outrageous success by Patricia and Karen. I have always been a champion of adopting adult dogs and this book is most certainly a valuable resource for anyone welcoming an adult dog into their home. Yes, you can teach an old dog new tricks. Let Patricia and Karen show you how.
Dr. Ian Dunbar, DVM, founder of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers

If you are considering adopting a dog from a shelter then Love Has No Age Limit will be your perfect companion. Packed with great information, this book will make the transition period from shelter to home a lot easier for you and your dog. For shelters, Love Has No Age Limit will give adopters a unique support system, thereby increasing the rate of successful adoptions by helping to keep dogs in their new homes.
Victoria Stilwell, Animal Planet's It's Me or the Dog

If you've decided to adopt a furry homeless stranger, this booklet is your perfect resource. You'll provide love for your new dog, while Drs. McConnell and London will provide practical, accurate advice so you can avoid common mistakes and spark a life-long friendship.

Love Has No Age Limit, July 12, 2011
Reviewer: Debra Eldredge
Love Has No Age Limit is a book by respected authors Patricia McConnell and Karen London. Both authors have PhDs in animal behavior and plenty of real world experience to back up the book learning.

This book is geared at 'Welcoming an Adopted Dog into Your Home' and is aimed at helping families adjust to adopting an adult or adolescent dog versus a puppy. Of course, much of the information is appropriate for a puppy adoption or addition as well.

The book starts with preparations. If you have warning or know ahead of time you will be adding a canine member to your family, this chapter is excellent for reminding you of the challenges a new dog will face. Followed by 'Coming Home: The First Day', these chapters can help get your new relationship off to a great start. Simple suggestions such as taking the new dog for a walk with the current resident dog are excellent for avoiding dog/dog problems.

I did feel the veterinary care chapter was a bit lacking in important information and the training chapter is basically an overview of what training your new dog may need. The authors do emphasize that this is not intended as a complete tome on adding a new dog to your family. It is an overview of what is important and what situations people commonly face with a new dog. They provide a listing of resources, both books and websites, to fill out your depth of knowledge.

The last section of the book covers Behavior Problems 101. While no problems are covered in depth, there are practical and useful suggestions for how to deal with dilemmas while you get more knowledge or help. So if you wake up at midnight with your new dog snarling over a toy she is guarding, there is some quick advice to get you past the immediate problem - throw some really great treats in another direction. When your dog abandons her prize for the treats, you quickly and quietly retrieve the object she was keeping. The next day, you can check out the in depth resources and develop a full and detailed plan for handling the dog's resource guarding problem.

The print may be a touch small but the book is very well organized. It is easy to find the information you are looking for. I love the cover photo of Theo - clearly an older dog adoptee. Love Has No Age Limit sells for $9.95 through Dogwise.com and would be an excellent addition to your library if you were contemplating adding an older dog to your family.
