The Author - Debby Kay has 40 years of experience as a canine professional and pioneered many firsts in canine scent work. She left her position as a research scientist for the Federal Government to become Training Director of International Detector Dogs Ltd., training the first toxic waste detection dog. She was an early pioneer in training dogs to help ecologists, geologists and field biologists find targeted specimens for their research. Debby trained some of the first classes of dogs and instructors for the ATF explosive dog program in Virginia.

This book has more applications than just training law enforcement detector dogs! With the rising interest in the sport of scent detection like K9 Nose Work, training your dog to detect a scent like birch can be very enjoyable for both of you. And hey, if you want to train a truffle dog, this is a good place to start.

Basic training and drills from beginner-level to advanced are covered. If you pay careful attention and become a bit obsessive about thoughtful drill practice, you can probably develop a dog's ability to detect just about anything. Author Debby Kay includes drills on search patterns like those used for covering open ground or a room full of suitcases. The exercises and drills are easy to follow and the text is full of insight that the author has gained through 40 years of training detection dogs, including some of the first classes of explosive detection dogs for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (or ATF). Her Pro Tips and troubleshooting advice reflect hard-learned lessons from training all kinds of dogs to detect all kinds of things.

In the Introduction, Ms. Kay cautions you that this isn’t a stand-alone book—she suggests you have some guidance from a professional detection trainer or attend one of her Super Sniffer™ workshops. As she says, she makes some assumptions about your knowledge and level of training and she doesn’t spend time covering them here.

But as I read through it, I think a dedicated amateur can explore many of the exercises with no harm to handler or dog. The operant conditioning training methods will be familiar to positive reinforcement trainers. Training is force-free and encourages the dog to discover on his own what will earn the reward, whether treat or toy.

I have a copy of the paperback version of this book, which makes it handy for adding training notes in the spaces provided.
