Expanded Description:

Committed trainers and owners can solve this problem!
Treating separation anxiety in dogs is not quick or easy—but it can be done. The successful ingredients are cooperation, commitment and time on the part of the dog trainer and the owners. In this important new book, author Malena DeMartini-Price shares her 5 Phase Treatment Protocol and related strategies to help dogs overcome the fear of being left alone and addresses the trauma it can inflict on both the dog and their owners. Trainer handouts, detailed step-by-step training tips and a sample initial interview questionnaire are included.

Learn about:
• The critical role that “suspending absences” plays in the early part of the treatment plan and how owners and trainers can make this more manageable.
• How dog trainers can make the treatment of separation anxiety in dogs a specialized business.
• The role that management techniques and medications can play to help support the recommended behavior modification strategies.
• How technology, including remote feeding devices and web cams, can be used to monitor a dog’s progress in overcoming his fear of being left alone.

What experts are saying about Treating Separation Anxiety in Dogs:
This new book gives us all a road map, not just for assessing severity and hitting all the stops treatment-wise, but also for supporting clients through the process. Countless dogs will be saved from euthanasia or a life of perpetual misery.
Jean Donaldson, Founder and Director, The Academy for Dog Trainers, author The Culture Clash

An absolutely indispensable guide for anyone looking to make successful treatment of separation anxiety an integral part of their training business. There are many books all trainers should have on their bookshelves. This is one to keep on your desk.
Veronica Boutelle, dog*tec founder, author How to Run a Dog Business

What reviewers are saying...

“Separation anxiety has long been a thorn in the side of dog trainers - we acknowledge what a traumatic experience it can be for dogs and their owners, yet even some of the most seasoned and talented trainers routinely turn away these cases because of how challenging they can be. Separation anxiety are high maintenance cases, and can lead to trainer and owner burnout if not handled well.
Price has taken this behavioral bull by the horns in her new separation anxiety book, offering trainers a rich and comprehensive resource on some of the most challenging aspects of SA behavior modification, providing great client support documents, business resources, and most importantly, a accessible and effective protocol for SA.
Trainers will find many of the exercises in the book are useful for a variety of other applications as well; her plan for training confinement areas, for example, is an extremely useful tool for trainers consulting with clients who own dogs that are reactive to visitors and need to teach the dog to feel comfortable in a "sanctuary" while they host guests.
Thoughtful, compassionate, and thorough, this book will be a resource that trainers come back to again and again, on a topic that has never been covered so well. Click, treat, Malena - well done!”.
Casey Lomonaco Director of Volunteer and Behavior Programs at SPCA of Tompkins County

Very helfpul resource for trainers, November 22, 2014
Reviewer: Chrissi Schranz
Very helpful resource for trainers working with separation anxiety cases. The tips and treatment plans are adaptable to individual cases, and the chapters on using technology to monitor behavior during absence gave me lots of new ideas. The business chapter is helpful as well, since separation anxiety clients need a different kind of relationship with their trainer than other clients do.

'Treating Separation Anxiety in Dogs' ~ A Review, May 23, 2014
Reviewer: Deb Little
I have been thinking about how to approach this review for a while. I think the best way to do this is in two parts.

The first part is 'the message' that I took away. The second part is ' the actual writing' of the book. My perspective is that of an owner, not a trainer. Although, I feel this book speaks to both, equally.

'The message' that came across loud and clear to me is one of HOPE. Hope that my dog, along with thousands of others, can be worked with, helped, treated, and ultimately, overcome this horrific disorder. I don't use the word 'horrific' lightly. As an owner, it is upsetting when something in your home is damaged, and sometimes very costly to repair or replace. However, for the dog, it truly is horrific; the panic the dog endures during the time the owners are out of the house is overwhelming and debilitating. Neither the dog or the owners can live without treating this disorder. This book shares the message of hope, gives owners and trainers the tools they need to combat, and ultimately conquer, Separation Anxiety.

This book is extremely well written, easily understood (even though I'm not a trainer), provides great examples on how to write up the treatment plans, and explains, in detail, the five phases of the treatment protocol.

I especially enjoyed reading the case studies. I admit, I read them first! Along with that, the photos help the text come alive. I'm a 'photo junkie' and really think the photos add to the reader's understanding.

In my opinion, whether you are a dog trainer or an owner of a dog with Separation Anxiety, this book is a 'must read .' If you are an owner and currently working with a trainer, reading this book would make a great addition to your program. If you are an owner and don't know where to turn, this book will give you the information you need to either start a treatment program on your own, or give you resources where you can turn for help. If you are a dog trainer, by taking on Separation Anxiety cases, you can make a HUGE difference in the lives of these dogs and their owners.

GREAT, WONDERFUL, SUPERB, EXCELLENT, SPLENDID, MAGNIFICENT, IMPRESSIVE, AND GENERALLY A HECK OF A GOOD BOOK!
