How to turn a second-hand dog into a first-rate pet! Adopting a dog who has been previously owned or a street-wise stray can mean a crash course in Canine Socialization and Human Interaction 101. Starts out with "How dogs learn," covers being pack leader, what your new dog needs (tangible and intangible!), some basic training, special circumstances (abused, etc.), professional secrets you can use, more! This is a particularly popular book for animal shelters or humane societies to give or sell with newly adopted dogs. Illustrated with black & white cartoons by the author.

outdated methods, August 27, 2008
Reviewer: Stephanie Wesloh
The methods used here are outdated and not as postive or fun as newer methods. Not harsh, but certainly not nearly the best way to train and relate to your dog.

Great training aid for the 'pet' ownder, January 11, 2007
Reviewer: Suz
This is a great little book with sound advice for the 'just' pet owner. Despite the title, sound logic also applies to puppies. Not for those considering advanced training, but for the multitude who just want a steady family companion - a great aid.

Good Starter Book, July 21, 2006
Reviewer: Kristina
This is a great starter book for someone who has just adopted a new dog or volunteers in shelter dog situations. There is a lot of good insight here. Unfortunatly, a few of the techniques are a little outdated for training - since the size of this book is so small, this does bring a little concern, but not tremendous. This book would have been much better if it was larger and had more info, but as a starter book, I enjoyed it.
