Expanded Description:
For more than 30 years the Monks of New Skete have been among America's most trusted authorities on dog training, canine behavior, and the animal/human bond. Long before Elizabeth Marshall Thomas revealed "the hidden life of dogs," and long before Cesar Milan started whispering on TV, the Monks of New Skete were there, offering sage and practical advice on the rewards and responsibilities of sharing your life with a canine friend. In their two now-classic bestsellers, How to be Your Dog's Best Friend and The Art of Raising a Puppy, the Monks draw on their experience as long-time breeders of German shepherds and as trainers of dogs of all breeds to provide--brilliantly distilled--the essential information every dog owner needs. This new edition of THE ART OF RAISING A PUPPY will feature new photographs throughout, along with updated chapters on play, crating, adopting dogs from shelters and rescue organizations, raising dogs in an urban environment, and the latest developments in canine health and canine behavioral theory.

Old outdated info, October 2, 2010
Reviewer: Trainer of 20 years
I remember reading this book so long ago when I was starting new in dog training. It was 'the' book and I felt so knowledgable being with the information this book offered. Over the years through experience, studies and attending presentations, I found more than half the book is incorrect. Just like we wouldn't use a chemistry textbook of 20 years ago, since many new discoveries had found no longer true, I find this book the same. It is time to put this book in the archives shelf to show what we use to do. It is time to move on and learn something new, more refined and better techniques.

Well Written with Essential Information, February 7, 2008
Reviewer: Chapel Taylor
This was one of the first books I read when getting in to dog training and it is still the one I most often recommend to my students. The Monks' writing is clear and easy to read and is also sprinkled with their own personality and stories. They offer clear explainations of the development stages of a puppy and how you must adjust your training and expectations for your dog based on those development stages. Their method is centered around communicating with your dog in the same way that dogs communicate with each other. They use their unique position as monks to really study dogs objectively and without judgement. They heavily emphasize the need for routine and consistency in a puppy's life and even offer some sample day-to-day schedules which lay out when to feed and walk your dog to promote quick housebreaking. A must have for every dog owner.

Some Value, October 7, 2006
Reviewer: C. Sanders
While some of the techniques in this book are a little outdated, there is still a lot of valuable information regarding the lifestages of the puppy and how to help your puppy grow up to be a well socialized dog. An interesting read that I have referred back to a few times while raising puppies over the years. The stories are a little lacking, but I have yet to find a book as detailed on the individual lifestages of the puppy's mental and physical growth.
