Conflicting information, August 9, 2008
Reviewer: Crystal Saling
I understand that this book was published 18 years ago, but some of the information seems even more outdated than that. There were several seemingly contradictory statements such as don't use physical punishment to correct a dominance agression problem and then stating in the very next paragraph how to physically discipline a dominance agression problem. In the back of the book he tells people not to punish the dog when you are teaching a new behavior because the dog doesn't know what is expected yet; but in another section- where he is teaching the reader how to train the dog not to bark when someone is at the door, he recommends punishing the dog for the wrong response- a response that has not yet been learned. Additionally, this book had alot of information on scientific information but didn't have very good (or very many) references to primary resources.

One book I go back to over and over, April 26, 2007
Reviewer: Penny Watkins
I borrowed this book from a friend of mine when I wanted to understand some of the behaviors of my Chesapeake Bay Retriever. There is something for every kind of behavior in this book; this certainly is a book that you will want to have in your library..the insight into the dog's mind will help you understand your dog better and help create a better relationship with your pup. Since borrowing the book from my friend and then getting and lending out the book to other dog lovers that subsequently got their own copies, I would highly recommend this book to anyone that loves and wants to be a better companion to their pups.
