helping dogs cope with challenging situations, July 2, 2004
Reviewer: Lorraine May, A Dog's Choice Holistic Training
I am a great fan of specific, precise booklets. This is one of them. Clothier successfully makes the case that body postures and emotions are so related, that a change in one can bring about a change in the other. In her humane and informed style, she not only presents well thought out concepts, but also, practical ways of integrating this information into training dogs. In a world (including dog training, unfortunately) where cookie cutter approaches are often valued for their implied ease, at times without the knowledge of why they are even applied, Clothier reminds us to be clear about why we choose the training techniques that we choose, and to be aware of the possible impact on each dog as an individual. You won't find any lists of 'this means this or that means that'. It's not that kind of book. This book can help us increase a dog's options to cope with heretofore difficult situations by utilizing the connection between posture and emotions.

This book has a great premise. However, it never delivers. The author does a great job explaining why it is important to be aware of your dog's body language as well as your own. She indicates the types of areas to watch on the dog, but she never really explains what you are looking for. If you are purchasing the book to try to solve a problem with your dog, this book most likely will not be the correct purchase for you as you will probably be frustrated once you are done reading it. You will have more questions than answers.
