| A Bit Much for Owners, January 14, 2009 |
| Reviewer: HappyDog |
While this is a great book for dog trainers and those with training 'chops', it may prove to be too much for the 'average' dog owner. It is extremely wordy in places (the author's background as an attorney may be coming to the fore), but is a good book. Don't buy this book unless you are going to go into competition obedience. Buy a simpler book that subscribes to the 'less is more' philosophy if you are a person that wants to get something out of clicker training for your pet.
It isn't a good book to teach the 'average' pet owner step by step obedience behaviors such as sit, down, come, stand, walk loosely on a leash, off, and leave it alone. It is chopped up too much because the book is better suited for competitive obedience. |

| This is an excellent book for people who want to clicker train their dog for competitive obedience. I would like to see more alternate ideas for teaching the exercises, but overall, an excellent book. |

| Competitive Edge with a Clicker!, February 19, 2007 |
| Reviewer: Diane Schuller |
This book is for everyone from the complete amateur to those in advanced competitive obedience training. Morgan Spector clearly outlines and then details getting the most proficiency from your dog, one step at a time, and with your dog enjoying the entire process!
Although not new to clicker training, I too have learned some interesting aspects or alternatives from Spector. One thing that made an enormous amount of sense to me was that he does not train a dog first to do only the Novice exercises, then the Open exercises, then the Utility exercises. No, instead, they are all taught early on incorporated within the whole training program. He will explain it very well (chapter 4) ... I love his term 'Beginning Utility'.
I appreciated his indepth explanations about the basics and am glad I didn't skip over that chapter, even though I have a good grasp of clicker training. He makes certain things more clear in that chapter plus he gives examples of why it makes sense to do things in a particular way, especially as it relates to training for the obedience exercises.
As someone else mentioned, you won't ever have to use that horrid ear pinch ever again in teaching any dog to retrieve. Instead you can get your dog to retrieve, reliably and happily. Isn't that what we want?
Buying this book is an investment in a happy -- and winning -- relationship in the obedience ring. |
