Expanded Description:
Practical, step-by-step directions that do not require more space, more people, or miracle dogs or owners. Ch. 1 describes ways to prepare existing facilities to enhance each dog's strength while providing a calm, stable environment that increases its receptivity to training and learning. Ch. 2 explains procedures for temperament testing. This is the first step in identifying a dog's adoptability and finding a compatible and lasting match so that adoption and euthanasia decisions are not based on length of stay, breed type, or number of dogs in the facility. Ch. 3 identifies the basic training that will prepare dogs for success in homes. It illustrates simple training techniques that all shelter personnel can learn and incorporate into their daily shelter routine. Ch. 4 provides guidelines for matching dogs with potential adopters' lifestyles, needs, experiences, and limits. Includes reproducible handouts that shelters can customize and give out, including tips for the first few weeks, information for adopters with children, warning signs, and guidelines about when to call the shelter for help.
