Sound conditioning of very young puppies is incredibly effective and reaps HUGE benefits that last throughout the puppy's lifetime even when you stop playing it. It works for older dogs as well, but just takes longer and requires more patience. I bought this CD and I also bought the SOUNDS GOOD CD - PUPPY HABITUATION (I could do without the barking dog tracks in both CDs, however, as they just set my dogs off barking every time.)
Of the two CDs, this one is my favorite. It has more tracks with more variety. Some of the tracks are:
Gunshots & fireworks
Sirens
Children Playing & Screaming
Vet Office
Traffic
Groomer
Airport
Thunderstorms
Kennel
Machines & Tools
Infant crying
If you are at all sound sensitive yourself, you have to play this kind of conditioning CD when you're not in the immediate area or else risk insanity! The noises are indeed varied and real to life. The concept is simple. DESENSITIZE your puppy (or older dog) gradually to environmental sounds and thereby reduce/eliminate stress.
IT REALLY WORKS! My 6 month-old pup was weaned on these CDs. His breeder played the CDs many hours a day from the time he was a wee pup and it shows. He is just about oblivious to startling noises and is TOTALLY fearless around shop machines, vacuum cleaners, thunder, crashing pots and pans, and other common loud noises that startle most dogs.
My only complaint is the price. IMO they are just too expensive. By the time I paid for shipping, the total came to almost $60.00 for two CDs! Still, it is a small investment in the long term and will allow you to literally mold and CREATE a relaxed, confident dog who is comfortable around loud noises and chaos.
Especially wonderful training for a future show dog. If you have an older dog who is afraid of thunder, these CDs will help desensitize him if used gently, and patiently, over the long term. |
