Expanded Description:
2008 revised and expanded edition! Recent research has resulted in new theories as to how our pet dogs perceive us humans, particularly in a dog/owner relationship. There have been a number of books and papers that have started to dispel the idea that our dogs, given the chance, would try to raise their status in their human "pack." The purpose of this booklet is to pull the new research and theories together, and combined with the author's own ideas on the subject, produce an overview of an alternative view of dominance. In other words, do some dogs really want to raise their status within a human pack? Is it fact or fiction? It is possible that the end result may raise as many questions as it answers, but we need to open our minds and consider that perhaps there is an alternative view to the pack hierarchy rules and that dogs are not really plotting to overthrow mankind!

Pawrific!, March 9, 2007
Reviewer: Adrienne Power
It always annoyed me reading books where they go on about you being Alpha and keeping your dog in his place. Don't let him sit on the top of the stairs looking down as he is on a height and gets ideas of being dominant over you. My dog sits on the top of the stairs all the time. Its his guarding position and I like that he is watching things for me, I feel more secure in my home with him at that vantage point and I hated to think I was doing the wrong thing letting him sit there. But now this book has put my mind at rest on this point.

Great little book!, July 12, 2006

Turid recommended this book. I got it, read it and now pass it along to my students to read it. For most trainers this is nothing new, but for the novice pet owner, a great eye opener to set the stage for getting rid of the old dominance model, that not only is false, but can be quite dangerous! (Just ask anyone that has 'alpha rolled' their dog how many times they have been bit!)

Great for the average dog owner, December 5, 2003

Excellent little book for helping the average dog owner (and some trainers)get over the dominance myth. References works by Mech, Donaldson, Fisher, O'Heare and Overall. Easy to read and understand. I keep copies on hand for my students and put it on my recommended reading list.
