Expanded Description:

Psychopharmacology has become a popular, and sometimes mandatory addition to treatment regimes for canine and feline patients with behavioral problems; however, clients and practitioners should be dissuaded that behavioral drugs are 'quick fixes'. Veterinarians should only prescribe psychotropic medication when they have a specific idea of how the mechanism of action of the drug will affect the target behaviors associated with a specific diagnosis. The diagnosis must be treated rather than non-specific signs. Newer psychotropic medications demonstrate the extent to which truly abnormal behaviors are dysfunctions of neurochemistry; synaptic or cellular metabolism; or genetic encoding and 'learning', or LTP, hence there is a clear role for the interaction of neuropharmacology and behavioral and environmental modification.

Dr. Overall has given hundreds of national and international presentations and short courses and is the author of over 100 publications on behavioral medicine and lizard behavioral ecology. She has also been a regular columnist for both Canine and Feline Practice journals and currently writes a bimonthly column for DVM News Magazine. Her best selling textbook, Clinical Behavioral Medicine for Small Animals, was published by Mosby in 1997. Her most recent book, Handbook of Small Animal Behavioral Medicine, was published by Saunders in 2007. (2 DVDs)

Not for the faint hearted, May 28, 2008
Reviewer: Stevie Mathre
This is definately the best DVD i've purchased. I'm still not all the way through it since I have to listen/watch it several times to pick up all the details. Karen's presentation is thorough, easy to understand, and chock full of information. I'm not a scientist by training, but this DVD has reminded me of how much I do enjoy science, and I've gotten totally excited about it's applicability.

I'm currently watching the Psychopharmacology DVD, and it's incredible. I'm understanding the nervous system, the brain, the ways drugs affect it, how it's all related to behavior... Things are making sense in so many ways, and I feel better able to help students - NOT by practicing vet med, but in understanding what's meant instead of what is sometimes said, and when options are valid.
