Expanded Description:
There are many DVDs on the market that can teach you how to train your dog key basic behaviors - but there is only one featuring Jean Donaldson! And what makes this new DVD particularly valuable is that Jean teaches you how to train, so you learn skills that you can apply to other behaviors as well. So with Jean's methods, you will learn how to "get the behavior," how to reward and reinforce a behavior, and then how to strengthen the behavior by building duration and adding distractions. With those skills mastered, you can rather quickly move to develop: A reliable sit and down stay; To come when called regardless of distractions; To sit politely and watch you, refraining from jumping on people or lunging at other dogs.
If you are a trainer, you will find this DVD a great primer on how to teach your students to train basic skills in a classroom setting. If you are an owner who wants to teach your dog basic skills, you will not find a better teacher than Jean!

| Awesome Training Resource to have on hand..., June 23, 2008 |
| Reviewer: Scott Alexander |
| This is a great dvd to have on hand for both experienced trainers and novice dog owners. For the novice owner, it's a sound guide to building a communication network w/ your dog, and in my opinion, should be the primary training resource for folks training on their own. For experienced trainers, this is a fantastic reminder of how to maximize your interaction w/ our canine buddies and their owners and teaching the fundamentals. |

I was very pleased with several aspects of this DVD. First, the videography, lighting, sound, all the tech aspects are spot-on. I wish I had access to such a beautiful training facility. Leather couches in the office? Luxurious! And Jean's wardrobe is snazzy...
I gained a lot of tips for teaching my students, and several ideas for breaking down behaviors. However, I've had much less luck in getting students at the same level and actually convincing them to take my suggestions. No class I've ever been in has had dogs so calm and attentive, so close together. Certainly not when the dogs are just learning to sit & watch. Makes me think the demo dogs in her 'class' are much more highly trained than implied. If I were doing a DVD, I'd stack my 'class' too.
I'll be incorporating a lot: Premack recalls, counting trials (I like her method very much), her +R of students... (I've NEVER had a student with timing even coming close to the worst of her 'students').
I'm very keen to see her handle a class of monster dogs... just to study her group-wrangling skills. With students who just don't 'get it.' The DVD is slick & professional, and shows her in a great light. I need to learn the other end of the range.
For students, anyone just learning, or anyone not completely sold on positive, this is a great DVD to watch. I'm very comfortable recommending this DVD. |

| I wish I could rate this better ..., June 13, 2008 |

Unfortunately, I can't.
I had been told several times by a graduate of the SFSPCA Academy that I needed to see Jean Donaldson in person. A few years ago, I got that opportunity and was blown away. I was so looking forward to this video, expecting to see the same quality and amazing training that I'd seen at the workshop.
There are good things about this video. Although cheesy, the one-on-one between Jean and the dog owners goes a long way to pointing out common problems that owners have in applying instructions from pet dog classes, and how to fix those problems. I love that she frequently reminds owners not to push too hard even if the dog seems to be “getting it.” The recall training using the Premack principle is particularly great, especially since I've heard many traditional trainers say that a R+ trained dog will never come to the owner if s/he doesn't have treats. She also emphasizes “life rewards” in training, which I absolutely love, and has several beautiful demos with Buffy.
On the down side, I am really surprised at some of the demos. There is a lot of inconsistency between what Jean says to do and what is done. Sometimes it's the owners – one owner clicked several times for a dog watching the treat hand instead of the person's eyes, another pulled the dog into a sit by a collar, another had food on him and rewarded while practicing the Premack recalls. Jean doesn't correct any of these owners, and actually praises the owner in the first example. Even Jean shows some problematic training. There are several cases, with both Buffy and the owner's dogs, where the failures to respond to the cue are ignored and the dog is said to have gotten “5 out of 5” when it's more like 5 out of 12. These are just a few examples. I understand that people are not perfect, but this is a DVD, not live TV, and I would think that problematic demos would be reshot.
I've seen what Jean is capable of, and to have a DVD far below what I expected is disappointing. This DVD is certainly better than some on the market, but I worry that the inconsistencies will be too confusing for pet owners. For professionals, save your money – and put it towards an in-person workshop with Jean! |
