Expanded Description:
Watch Jean Donaldson and Ian Dunbar take on the controversial and often misunderstood concept of dominance behavior in dogs. Do dogs really try to be "the boss"? Learn what science knows, and doesn't know, about canine behavior. A timely subject given the popularity of television shows featuring dogs behaving badly and trainers rehabilitating them--all within an hour!
There is an incredible interest in dog behavior and training as evidenced by the growing popularity of TV shows that focus on how to solve problem behaviors. Often, viewers are told that the problem is that their dog is trying to be “dominant” and that the owner simply needs to assert him/herself as the "leader of the pack". While this may make for compelling TV, dominance in dogs has not been subject to much scientific research. Many dog experts, well schooled in canine learning and behavior, dispute the idea that dominance plays a significant role in pet dog behavior. In this new DVD, leading canine authorities Jean Donaldson and Ian Dunbar take on this sometimes-controversial subject. Does dominance really exist and how does it impact the relationships between dogs and dogs and people and dogs? Do you have to be “dominant” over your dog to ensure that she is well trained? What does the modern trainer do or say to a client who does not understand why he or she does not train dogs "the way they do on TV"? All of these issues are dealt with in this fascinating, 4+ hour DVD by experts who place more stock in research and empirical results than in explanations based personal experience.

| Good addition to your library, July 7, 2009 |

I really liked Jean Donaldson's presentation about the history of the dominance model in trying to understand animal behavior. I have to say I wasn't 100% convinced that dogs don't have a social heierarchy from this disc, but subsequent reading has lead me to be more skepticle of the dominance model.
It is strange how Ian Dunbar pretty much totally contradicts Jean Donaldson's speach until again you do some more reading on the subject, then its easy to understand how they could come up with such different conclusions on the same topic.
I was a little dissapointed with the advice or lack-there-of as to how to handle this dog whispering craze. I wish there had been more practicle advice as I too go straight into my amygdala when I hear people talk about DW (there was some, especially on the Ian Dunbar disc). |

| Disappointed, January 27, 2009 |

| I excitedly awaited this video and upon watching it was very dissapointed. Had I paid for the actual seminar I would have felt even more disappointed. I love Jean Donaldson's 'Culture Clash' and in fact think it is one of, if not the best dog training/behavioral book ever written. She spoke of burnout on the video and unfortunately that is what she seems she is herself. She seems extremely frustrated. Ian went off on a tangent reagarding his agenda of trainers tracking their results. Nothing to do with the whole idea of dominance...which is what I thought this video would exclusively address. Very disappointed. Would save your money. |

| Fairness in Dog Training Methods, May 15, 2008 |

First, let me state I am a big fan of Ian Dunbar and will not be persuaded otherwise. I also am a fan of Jean Donaldson, and admire her drive and dedication to change the way we look at dogs/ dog training. Secondly, I am a dog training junkie. I welcome more information and am constantly evolving.
Jean Donaldson Disc One:
she does tend to stand on her soapbox, and will discuss many things to make her point that trainers need to bounce back, don't let a bad experience get you down. She goes onto explaining the pecking order of dogs, chickens, cockroaches, people, etc. She is an excellent behaviorist, but she should re-write her speech and cut to the chase faster... do it over please.
Ian Dunbar on Disc Two:
I play this one over and over. Ian entertains, educates, and explains how we should all work together as dog trainers. Yes! Excellent point.
As dog trainers, we all have valuable information and methods that should improve going forward.
My favorite AHA moment is when Dr Ian Dunbar points out that Real World Dog Training is boring. The television dog training that makes it to the major network has been edited. We need to know the things that are on the cutting room floor is the Real World dog training the general public needs to see, but normal dogs are boring. Not boring to their owners, not boring to dog trainers, but not exciting enough to be famous on the major networks.
That is all. I love the way Jean and Ian are able to help dog trainers to address the questions that may present themselves.
This seminar raises awareness of media vs real world. Moral of the story= Be true to yourself, and be true to your standards. We are all in this together, and dog trainers need to unite, not divide. I am happy with this DVD and would love to meet Ian and Jean someday. |
