This book has quite a bit of really good information in regards to the benefits of TD's and what a TD needs to know, however, there are also various references to outdated dominance theories - like when the author states that tug-o-war pits the dog against the owner which results in a dog that is overly dominant, pushy, etc, and therefore tugging is an inappropriate game.

The author also suggests that dogs be taught not to mouth people by holding the dog's muzzle shut until after it stops squirming, and recommends physically placing dogs into positions (ie, folding the dog's hind legs to place the dog in a sit, pulling the dog's front legs out from under him to place him in a down, etc) and repeatedly physically holding the dog in place until it stops struggling to teach it to obey and hold still for handling.

Despite all it's seemingly good information, the author's chosen methods discredit a good portion of the rest of the book for me. Science knows better now!

You are interested in sharing your dog with others, in Therapy Work, but you are not sure what is required. How should you prepare your dog (and yourself)? What training is needed, and what organizations are there for support? How to get started?

This book answers your questions. Well-written, comprehensive coverage of the concepts & practice of Therapy work. With this book's help, I was able to take my two dogs for their evaluations, find a tester for on-site observations, and get started on my own--helping the folks in my own community by making visits with my dogs.

I especially appreciate Kathy Diamond-Davis' priority on taking care of your dog first; after all, that's where it all begins. Where it leads is the to the extremely rewarding satisfaction of sharing your dog's love with others.

Highly recommended, and thanks to Kathy for sharing her learned experience.
