Expanded Description:
Honeybear and Skippy (Willard Bailey) stumble into the high-intensity world of AKC dog obedience competition as the most clueless of neophytes. They share a life- defining adventure in pursuit of the "Holy Grail" of dog sports. Their odyssey is an emotional roller coaster - a succession of cliffhangers resulting from injuries, training crises, performance curve balls and the mine field called the competition ring. Along the way there are underlying conflicts: about training philosophies and methods, with members of the lowlife fringe of the obedience community, and, indeed, internal conflicts. A must read for dog sports enthusiasts!

One team's adventure, warts and all, April 15, 2008
Reviewer: Pat Pierce
As a fairly green competitor myself, I laughed and cried and nodded a lot as the author tells of his training adventures, trial misadventures, and all the fun and heartbreak of Obedience trials. It's like listening to the most seasoned trainers gathered around a campfire, telling old war stories on their first dogs and the people who influended them as they trained. I loved the details remembered along each step of their quest - from crooked sits and fronts, to 'Honeybear weather' (oh, for the folks who only ever compete indoors on matting......) Every obedience team has a story to tell - and this one is worth sharing, especially with newcomers!

I can't remember when I have enjoyed a book as much. I lived every page with Skippy and HB. Truly an amazing pair. I will be reading it again and again. Wonderful tips as well on training and trialing. Thanks Willard for this wonderful and inspiring book.

An excellent writer.
I was saddened, however at all HB had to endure over the many years just to obtain this title. A true example of what a dog will do for their person despite physical limitations and inconsistent training. |
