Positive Reinforcement trainers reward the successes and ignore the failures, and we set our dogs up for success. This book is a list of ideas, nothing more, but even less - it's all about how to set your dog up for failure, not how to proof him. Admittedly, heeling in a store (p.39) might be a good idea for proofing (if they'll let you), but what do you do when the dog can't handle the proofing exercise as described in the book? There is no follow-up, nothing about how to break down the exercises in smaller increments. If the reader is assumed to be able to figure those bits out, then I'm sure she is intelligent enough to figure out ways to proof, too! Besides, the book is repetitive to a fault - the same kind of proofing repeated in chapter after chapter (one chapter per exercise). I stopped counting how many times it says to 'take a deep breath, cough, hum, or sneeze'! It's just a simple 'shopping list' of ideas dressed up in book form, with no thought behind it about what actually happens in the dog's mind, the purpose of the exercises, what can go wrong, etc. and written for the very confident dog only. If you have a dog that is less than very confident, who perhaps worries about making mistakes, or fails in the ring because of stress etc (which is oh, so common), embarking upon these so-called proofing exercises and setting your dog up to fail will do more harm than good.
No, spend $10 more and get Morgan Spector's 'Clicker Training For Obedience'. |

| Great resource!, April 26, 2007 |

| This is a wonderful resource to add to your training library. It gives lots of ideas for proofing all of the obedience exercise novice through utility. There are separate proofing ideas for training alone as well as training with others. Ideas for proofing involving environmental factors and involving sound. The last section of the book deals with combining skills and exercises. |
