APDT CHRONICLE OF THE DOG
“The old phrase, “What’s not to like?” comes to my mind as I think about this little gem of a homemade video production. There is nothing not to like about this DVD, and for those interested in APDT Rally, it is a wonderful tool to learn everything you need to know about the competition.
Clarissa Bergeman narrates and she and her little Pembroke Welsh Corgi “Anny” demonstrate the exercises. Occasionally Mr. George Bergeman stands in as a judge when needed. Ms. Bergeman’s love of Rally and her dedication to positive training shine through not only in her words, “all dogs are encouraged to participate ... and a positive relationship is at the heart of APDT Rally,” but also in her gentle, precise handling and obvious great working relationship with Anny. Those watching the video will learn just as much about obedience handling as they will about Rally, just from observing Clarissa and Anny working together. The hand signals and body language are precise yet unobtrusive; the timing as Ms. Bergeman pauses to let the dog settle at the end of an exercise is important, and her sweet praise for Anny is something for competitors to remember when out on a course.
The DVD is set up so that one can easily search whatever category of Rally they have interest in and is divided into sections covering Levels One through Three exercises. Each section has its own introduction which explains the rules of that level. Ms. Bergeman then works her way through each Rally sign numerically—first explaining what the sign means, and then demonstrating it with Anny. The explanations are clear and easy to understand, and she also includes hints about how to correctly perform the exercises as well as ways to remember how to do them correctly (such as counting the spirals as she navigates around three cones, then two, then one; or reminding that your dog will sit four times in the Halt, 1,2,3 Steps Forward exercise).
Clarissa also discusses in detail the Bonus Exercises for each Level, explaining that you need to tell the judge you will be doing these before you begin, and demonstrating how and when to remove your leash and then put it back on your dog. Also important is the detail she gives to each exercise, such as when you are allowed to treat or touch your dog; being aware of when you must proceed forward after a Finish without allowing the dog to sit; how to recall your dog or send them over a jump from an angle, etc.
The only thing that might have brought a little more to this production would have been some changes of scenery, as all the demos are done indoors in the same quiet area. It would have been fun to see Anny doing her work perhaps outside on grass, however, considering the nature of the DVD it does make sense to keep the focus on the details of the exercises.
Clarissa is careful to point out that one should access the APDT web site regarding the rules and details regarding APDT Rally competitions. I personally found this video extremely interesting as I had bought all the Rally signs when the sport first came out, but never competed in it, instead using them as fun inspiration for my classes, albeit incorrectly! Now after watching Ready to Rally! and learning the correct ways the signs should be negotiated it motivates me to want to get into the sport! I don’t think there’s any greater testament or validation for an instructional work than that.”

well done, January 31, 2009

This DVD is well worth its cost. It's straightforward, and (really important to me) clean. There's not clutter, background noise, camera movement, etc. It's well scripted, well edited, and well performed. I haven't followed APDT rally like I used to, and there have been changes. I learned a lot. Thank you.

This is a fabulous training video! I can't say enough great things. I can't believe what my tweenie daschund can now do. The instructions and demonstrations are very clear and extremely easy to replicate with your own dog. My dog, Charlotte, would love to meet Anny in person. There also has been a benefit for my own health. I have lost 7 pounds since doing this training with my Charlotte!
