If you are in the position of considering amputation for your canine companion, this book, written by a layman for the layman, will provide information that you won’t likely get from your veterinarian. You will have the time to read through the information at your own pace, and go back and re-read what you need, in the privacy of your home; a luxury you don’t usually have when discussing things with your vet. This book covers a wide range of topics from why a dog may need an amputation, factors that may influence your decision, what makes some dog’s better candidates for a successful procedure, and how to help the canine amputee live with the highest quality of life. Since cancer is one of the leading causes of amputation, a large portion of the book discusses cancer.
Perhaps the single most important message is that dogs do not perceive an amputation the same way many people might; the human part of the equation usually has more difficulty adjusting than the dog. In the author’s opinion amputation is far easier for a dog to adapt to than either blindness or deafness, and most dogs can go on to lead a relatively normal life.
While she occasionally goes off on tangents, such as spay and neuter, the reader will be better prepared to make a more informed decision, or hopefully come to better terms with a decision that has already been made. The title is an excellent choice for this book. While not an in depth coverage of the subject of amputation, when facing such an all or nothing decision, this book provides an excellent starting point, that is unavailable anywhere else. The reader is given the opportunity to consider the many aspects of life that will change, and those that likely won’t, for both owner and the dog. The resource section is also valuable. |
