| Beautiful, but...., July 20, 2006 |
| Reviewer: Michol Langelett |
Having around 20 encyclopedias of dog books in my own library, I set my criteria foremost by information about temperament. I like to see the good and the bad and everything in between so people can form their own opinions about how a certain breed may impact their lives. An undeniably beautiful book, I feel it glosses over the general traits of some breeds and some of the health problems that seem to plague others. Some of the ratings on grooming difficulty comparisons made me laugh out loud (give me a Peke any day over an Old English Sheepdog). I would worry about a first time dog owner being misled about the commitment level needed for some of the larger breeds as depicted in their profiles.
If you want outstanding color photos accompanied with a drawing to highlight show-quality features, this book will be a delight. You'll need at least one other book, however, if you want an in-depth discussion on each breed's personality and upkeep. |
