Summary: Think “functional” to solve your dog’s reactivity issues. Behavior Adjustment Training (BAT) was developed by author Grisha Stewart to rehabilitate and prevent dog reactivity. BAT looks at the function of growling, lunging, or fleeing and helps dogs learn socially acceptable behaviors that serve that same function. In a nutshell, BAT builds confidence by giving dogs a chance to learn to control their environment through peaceful means. That makes BAT very empowering to your dog or puppy, in a good way. It’s also empowering for you, as you learn how to understand your dog and help him learn to safely get along with people, dogs, and other “triggers.”

Expanded Description:
Think “functional” to solve your dog’s reactivity issues.
You will learn:
• How to encourage or shape a “replacement behavior” that provides your dog the same “functional reward” as reactivity.
• Why it is important to keep your dog calm in the presence of a trigger while teaching him to make good choices.
• Step-by-step instructions needed to stage BAT set-ups to work with your dog in a controlled environment.
• Practical ways to keep your dog from being pushed into a reactive state in and around your home and on walks.
• How to use BAT preventively for puppy socialization.
What experts are saying about Behavior Adjustment Training
Every trainer should have the methods described in BAT in their tool box. There’d be a lot more happy dogs and happy owners if they did!
Patricia McConnell, Ph.D., author The Other End of the Leash
Every trainer who works with dogs that aren’t completely bombproof should have both the technical skills of BAT and the learning theory behind it in their toolbox. Grisha Stewart presents a thoughtful, reader-friendly protocol that is appropriate for both professionals and laypeople. Both scientific and entertaining, this book will skilfully guide you through a sticky subject.
Leslie McDevitt, MLA, CPDT-KA, CDBC, author Control Unleashed: Creating a Focused and Confident Dog
Behavior Adjustment Training is an excellent resource for people who have reactive dogs, and the professional trainers who help them. Grisha Stewart’s instruction is easy to understand, enhanced by wonderful illustrations, and she includes the “technical jargon” for pros who crave the science!

What reviewers are saying...
The Midwest Book Review
Dogs, just like humans, have anxiety around others. "Behavior Adjustment Training: BAT for Fear, Frustration, and Aggression in Dogs" is a guide to working with dogs as a trainer and an owner and encourage dogs to behave appropriately in situations that inspire aggression and anxiety throughout their lives. Placing the focus on what triggers the behavior and how to calm a dog through it, and the importance of starting young, "Behavior Adjustment Training" is an insightful and much recommend dive into dog psychology for community library pets collections.

BAT is more than a method..., September 6, 2011
Reviewer: Shelly Volsche
I have only read portions of the book in helping proofread, but I can tell you that anything Grisha does, she does with all her heart. BAT is a fantastic protocol for helping reactive dogs learn to cope with their world. I'm so excited about this protocol that I am hosting Grisha in Las Vegas next week. Visit: www.GoodPawsTraining.com/grisha.htm for details. Plus, you can attend the free SuperZoo trade show while you are here!

Excellent Addition to Reactivity Training Library, March 4, 2012
Reviewer: Jamie
Behavior Adjustment Training by Grisha Stewart is an excellent resource for people who own reactive dogs. But I think anyone with a fearful dog or party-starter dog (also known as a “Tarzan Dog,” a term coined by Jean Donaldson) can benefit from the exercises contained within. The same protocol can also be used to help fearful dogs gain confidence.
The book gives a nice overview of the basic principles necessary to start Behavior Adjustment Training (BAT) as well as how the author developed the protocol. Along with detailing how to set up a session, she also goes into great detail about using BAT in everyday life and even spends time focusing on management strategies for the interim while you’re working with your dog (or when you can’t). The illustrations and diagrams within are also extremely helpful, especially for visual learners. The drawings also simplify the concepts in a way that allows the reader to easily comprehend the more complex aspects of BAT.
I also enjoyed the sections at the end which delved into clicker training, quadrants, and other nerdy aspects for those of us who are interested in that sort of thing. ;) The first-hand accounts and reviews from dog training professionals were a nice touch as well. |

Much needed tool..., March 30, 2012
Reviewer: Dennis Fehling
As a professional dog trainer who works with so many reactive and fearful dogs BAT has changed my life and the dogs I have worked with. We as trainers now have a great tool to add to our choices to help these often misunderstood dogs. Grisha explains BAT in terms that not only professionals can easily understand but also pet parents. Grisha also takes us on a very personal journey with her own dog Peanut and his recovery. She also can make fun of herself and is very honest about what worked and what did not work for peanut. I highly recommend this great book for anyone who works with dogs with any behavior issue.

I have been reading and studying books on reactivity and aggression for years, ever since I had a dog with this problem. I have to say that this is my favorite! There are other programs out there that will be successful, but I found that this author does the best job of organizing a program. She not only tells you what to do in various situations, but she explains WHY. This can only make us better trainers and more alert to our dog’s reactions to things.
“Set Ups” are highly recommended as part of the BAT program, and I experienced first-hand how valuable these can be. I helped a friend work on her dog’s fear reaction, and in recreating the event that scared him, and breaking it down into it’s component parts, we discovered that the dog was not reacting to what the owner had thought. Knowing exactly what to work on certainly makes for more successful training! There are many other suggestions in the book for managing the life of a reactive or aggressive dog, both at home and away. There are discussions about various tool options, and stories of successful training with dogs having various issues. This book is worth it’s weight in gold!!!!!

clicker training, January 31, 2013

The book to me is really on clicker training and when you have a noise sensitive dog it doesn't really work. Clicker training for my dogs doesn't really work as we live in the country and it is alot different than what most trainers work with. I have found that the clicker sound really bothers my dogs which I have 4 of. So to me it was just another clicker training book.
