Expanded Description:
An easy to understand version of how the pet food industry disguises the carb and sugar content of our pet foods; their "game of definitions" for various labels; the low-calorie impostors; and ways to get our canine's weight under control.
As a practicing vet and founder of the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, Dr. Ward exposes how pet owners and food manufacturers have created an obesity epidemic among pets. The author explains how to break the chow hound cycle to ensure healthier pets.
This is The End of Overeating for pets plus a simple, effective diet plan for dogs from the nationally known veterinarian of the Rachael Ray show.
Almost half of the dogs in North America are overweight or obese, putting them at risk for major medical problems and untimely death. Is your dog one of them?
Esteemed national television veterinarian and founder of the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, Ernie Ward has helped hundreds of dogs reclaim their optimum health with his comprehensive plan, and now he can help your dog, too. In this unprecedented look at how we care for our pets, Dr. Ernie opens our eyes to the shocking truth about why we have unknowingly created a Perfect Storm of Portly Pets. For example, did you know that many pet foods are so spiked with sugar and fat that they actually cause your dog to eat even when she isn't hungry? Or that many pet formulas are so loaded with carbohydrates that they're causing a nation of carboholic canines? And even worse: Most well-intentioned pet owners are overfeeding their dogs by 25 percent every day. The good news is there are simple ways you can turn the tide for good-and for the good of your dog. You'll discover:
* Must-know tips for stocking a healthy pet pantry
* Homemade meals and healthy treats that won't pack on the pounds
* How to avoid the unscrupulous marketing and packaging of some pet foods, supplements, and weight-loss formulas
* The best activities and exercises to maximize your pet's fitness without maxing out your time.
With cutting-edge science and ultra-practical tips, Dr. Ernie will help you give your dog the gift of great health that he or she deserves.

| Chow Hounds, January 30, 2012 |
| Reviewer: Debra Eldredge |
Chow Hound by Ernie Ward, DVM is a good read for anyone concerned about their dog's health and weight. . Dr. Ward has taken the war on canine obesity personally and set out to help families make a change in their dogs' weight and lives. Over 13 chapters, Dr. Ward covers everything from dog food marketing to how to objectively evaluate your dog's condition. He includes how to go about figuring out exactly what your dog needs and covers foods, both home cooked and commercial, that can help your dog on his personal weight loss campaign.
Right off the bat, Dr. Ward presents five good reasons for helping your dog to lose weight or to stay fit and trim:
· You want your dog to live a long time. Certainly we all hope our current dogs remain as our companions as long as possible.
· You want your dog to be healthy and active. It is much more fun when our dogs feel good and can go on walks and adventures with us.
· You want your dog to be pain-free and happy. Certainly avoiding arthritis is a good reason for keeping your dog trim.
· You want your dog to live a life without medications. Avoiding medications is healthier for your dog and your pocketbook!
· You want to save money on your pet's bills. A fit, active, healthy dog will generally have fewer and less expensive veterinary care costs.
Throughout the book, Dr. Ward dispenses science and common sense in equal measures while offering practical information for dog owners to use to develop a weight loss for their dogs. The description of digestion as being similar to doing a load of laundry is entertaining and educational. He also has some useful recipes, including some for treats, which are the downfall of many dog diet plans.
Along with diet, Dr. Ward provides guidance on exercise for your dog - realizing that just as people need a two pronged approach, so do dogs.
At the end of the book weight loss supplements are touched upon, as are the consequences of leaving your dog overweight and out of shape. The book is well researched and charts and graphs help to provide easy ways to quickly verify an info you need.
This book would be an excellent addition to any dog lover's library. |
