| If all dogs in the world were border collies and the DVD were half price, I'd give this five paws (stars). Even as it is, I'd still recommend it as very worthwhile... I particularly like that he lays out *clearly and in detail* the steps for teaching things such as verbal directionals. What some reviewers are calling boring (and I do understand why!) is really useful for those of us with maybe a bit less dog experience who can benefit a lot from seeing things done over and over, to study the subtleties of how he's doing things. On the down side, in addition to the price, I wish the DVD could have shown work done with breeds other than border collies. I found some things kind of hard to relate to working with my Lab, as he is just mentally/physically/motivationally a very different kind of dog. Also I get the feeling that the video probably reflects the basics as Derrett understood them 10+ years ago rather than necessarily *today*. Still, if you will be using this type of handling system and like step-by-step demonstrations, the dvd is quite useful in my opinion, and *almost* worth its price. |

As noted in my title, it is hard for me to decide how to 'rate' this DVD. This is partially because I do train dogs professionally and have better than average understanding of training behavior in general. However, my training and experience in agility is essentially limited to some Susan Garrett DVDs and books.
My intention when renting this was to learn the essentials of circle work (which was adequate) and front/rear crosses, which was covered in ten minutes or so and in less detail than I had hoped.
So, keeping that in mind, it was not until about minute 40 that I heard something particularly new (teaching directional cues) and failed to have much more luck following that. If you have a basic understanding of shaping or approximating behavior as well as proofing then you might find yourself in the same boat.
Overall this DVD has several failings. One is that he works with his own dogs almost exclusively, and they rarely make mistakes. This is a common problem in instructionals but a big one because it robs you of the ability to learn from their dog's errors during the learning process. If you want to watch a trained dog, you might as well watch them in competition.
In the same vein, he will sometimes say 'teaching X is useful' but fail to mention any particular detail in how to teach it. Similarly, there are times where he says to do something, but does not mention the value or reason behind it.
Overall, considering the extreme price point on this, I would not recommend this to anyone. That said, I do have and enjoy is 'Shame about the Handler' DVD. |

| I really enjoyed this DVD collection. It really shows the basic work you need to do and now my dog FINALLY has a reliable cross behind. |
