Summary: Dr. Dunbar discusses the hyper dog and the conditioning that calms them so that they may reach a higher quality of life.

|
Expanded Description:
When dogs collide with adolescence, hyperactivity and reactivity wax and attention wanes. Reactivity requires oodles of classical conditioning (with effective operant conditioning appearing as an unexpected co-star). Hyperactivity and lack of attention require all-or-none reward training. Hyperdogs are so trainable — the motivation is already there! Attention and reliability (measured by decreases in Command: Response Ratios) come when hyperdogs are calmed. Decreasing hyperactivity and reactivity allows dogs to maintain their quality of life. (DVD COVERS MAY VARY AND CHANGE)

More than half of this DVD is Dr. Dunbar discussing Dr. Dodman's previous seminar, answering questions about a previous seminar, and going off on tangents.
The time it takes for him to cover reactivity is probably around 10 minutes, and what he manages to actually discuss in this time frame is only the most basic of basics.
It does take him more time to cover hyperactivity, but much of this time is spent discussing how effective nagging can be for training a dog, and how learning theory doesn't apply to what dog trainers do. He talks about Premack, but doesn't actually ever use the word 'Premack', and unless I'm mistaken, he never even addresses lack of attention, but instead discusses OCD behaviors.
Finally, in the middle of a sentence talking about Open Paw, someone tells him his time is up, to which he replies 'You're so right!' and then the DVD ends.
Dr. Dunbar was so incredibly difficult to follow and switched from subject to subject so often that I wasn't able to glean much information from this DVD at all, but from what I can tell, it doesn't have much to offer, anyhow. |
