Expanded Description:
Mastering the art of dog-human communication. Draws on research in animal behavior, evolutionary biology, and years of personal experience, Coren demonstrates that the average dog can differentiate between 60 and 140 words, though some research suggests that dogs can hear many more and also pick words out of sentences and respond to them. Examines people's beliefs about the ability of their dogs to communicate and contrasts those with the scientific reality. Explores the limits of dogs' language abilities and charts the possibilities. Tip on how humans can mimic the language dogs use to talk with each other, also shows that a great deal of communication between dogs and humans is possible, beyond simply giving and obeying commands.

| To the untrained eye, dog signals all look the same. This book points out the differences. I don't agree with every part of this book, however, I love how this book gives you more than pictures and charts to understand what your dog is saying to you, it gives you detailed information and examples that make sense. I recommend it to my clients. |

| while I don't totally agree with everything Stanley had to say, I still gave him 5 paws. Wonderfully written, lots of food for thought, and isn't that what a good book should do? Make you think! I recommend it to all of my students. |

As a dog daycare employee, I thought this book was superbly written and well-informed. It really helped me learn more about what the dogs were trying to tell us about how they were feeling. Since learning 'how to speak dog', I was able to meet a terrified pit bull in a shelter, go into her kennel run and have her come to meet me on her own terms without 'threatening' her. She is now my companion and friend who trusts me completely! If only strangers could read her doggy body language...
This book is a must for everyone-dog owner or not. |
