Outdated, February 18, 2013
Reviewer: Serena Marangoni
The book is not totally bad, it's well written and some things are interesting, most of the information though, is badly outdated. There's a lot about dominance, mostly based on wolves observation that has proved wrong, or at least not applicable to dogs (read Barry Eaton's Dominance in Dogs to know why)

Extremely unscholarly, April 14, 2012
Reviewer: Gary Hughes-Fenchel
The author makes numerous suggestions for dog training protocols based on her understanding of wolf behavior. Her knowledge of wolf behavior is (according to her) based on films. I'm well read on this topic, and her views on wolf behavior are apparently based on studies done on captive zoo wolves in the 50s; their conclusions have since been overturned numerous times. Barry Eaton's book (Dominance in Dogs: Fact or Fiction) available also at Dogwise is a much better read. Citations to peer-reviewed studies are nowhere to be found in this tome.

Unlike most authors basing dog training advice on deprecated wolf studies, the author does not advocate physical coercion, so I'm not completely panning the book. But there are much better books out there.

Excellent Training Source, June 23, 2011
Reviewer: MCR
This book is absolutely wonderful. Anyone who does not believe in Alpha status and believes it is outdated, should actually try the advise in this book. Have any of you actually tried it, or just jumped to conclusions. I have been training dogs for many, many years. I was hesitant when I first read the book but followed her advise to the letter. Now my training time takes half the time it used to.....time wise, that means 6-12 months quicker than it used to be. Earning my obedience titles has been easier and comes with higher scores. My dogs are all extremely well behaved and I had issue's with them before reading the book. Fence running, jumping on people, seperation anxiety...her advise works. I have extremely happy dogs. Before you judge, try it!!! It works in all training situations; agility, obedience, and confirmation. I highly recommend ALL of Jan Fennels publications.
