Expanded Description:
Honeybear and Skippy (Willard Bailey) stumble into the high-intensity world of AKC dog obedience competition as the most clueless of neophytes. They share a life- defining adventure in pursuit of the "Holy Grail" of dog sports. Their odyssey is an emotional roller coaster - a succession of cliffhangers resulting from injuries, training crises, performance curve balls and the mine field called the competition ring. Along the way there are underlying conflicts: about training philosophies and methods, with members of the lowlife fringe of the obedience community, and, indeed, internal conflicts. A must read for dog sports enthusiasts!

I just finished this book a few days ago. This book had a great impact on me. I had been 'dreaming' that one day I would get into the obedience ring but fear always stepped in the way. I started out doing obedience in 1987. But I didn't want to go further because I just couldn't stomach the choke chain and I didn't think I would be good enough. hank goodness I know other methods to train today. But, I have had to get over my ring fears. As Willard explained his ups and downs, it really gave me a sense that this is a journey, it isn't about you have to win and get perfect scores all the time. Something clicked with me reading his book and I entered a Beginner Novice A class. I realize this is an alternate class, but it really helped with the ring fears. My second qualifying score I got a 196. This is giving me the confidence to tackle the Novice A class, which I will show in about 5 weeks. Training is a wonderful journey and about caring more about your dog than an ego. Thank you Willard! I am now currently reading 'OTCH Dreams.' Have the first book done, now onto the second part.

One team's adventure, warts and all, April 15, 2008

As a fairly green competitor myself, I laughed and cried and nodded a lot as the author tells of his training adventures, trial misadventures, and all the fun and heartbreak of Obedience trials. It's like listening to the most seasoned trainers gathered around a campfire, telling old war stories on their first dogs and the people who influended them as they trained. I loved the details remembered along each step of their quest - from crooked sits and fronts, to 'Honeybear weather' (oh, for the folks who only ever compete indoors on matting......) Every obedience team has a story to tell - and this one is worth sharing, especially with newcomers!

I can't remember when I have enjoyed a book as much. I lived every page with Skippy and HB. Truly an amazing pair. I will be reading it again and again. Wonderful tips as well on training and trialing. Thanks Willard for this wonderful and inspiring book.
