Weekly Update from Dogwise: Dominance in Dogs

Dear Dogwise Customer,

Dogwise Publishing is pleased to announce the release of a new and revised version of Barry Eaton's Dominance in Dogs - Fact or Fiction? The publication of this book is timely in that the issue of dominance as it relates to pet dogs continues to be a hot one among trainers, behaviorists and the general public. Clearly there are a lot of myths and mis-information surrounding the issue of dominance. For years many people have assumed that: (1) dogs evolved from and are closely related to wolves; (2) wolves in the wild supposedly live in packs with strict pecking orders that are "dominated" by the alpha wolf; (3) that left to their own devices dogs will seek to "dominate" their owners and other dogs; and (4) owners need to "dominate" their dogs to keep them under control. More recent research has called into question just how closely modern pet dogs are related to wolves and more significantly that the behavior of wolves in the wild in relation to other wolves that they live with is much different than previously assumed. Barry's thesis is that the traditional thinking about our pet dogs needing to be "dominated" by their owners is outmoded and often results in training that is harsh and can imperil their relationships with their dogs. On the other hand, poorly trained or socialized dogs can learn that certain behaviors can get them what they want, for example growling at people who approach them as they are eating or resting in a favorite spot on a couch. And clearly some dogs are better than others at gaining access to resources such as food or toys. But Barry argues that these are learned behaviors, not some deep dark drive to dominate others, and that proper positive training and management techniques can be used to control them. While you may or may not agree with Barry, his book will help shed some new light on the subject and might make you look at the issue in a different way. Also available in an e-book.

Staying on the dominance theme, there are a number of books and DVDs now on the market that examine this issue including:

Our featured product this week is Out of the Box Dog Training Activity Card Game. This fun game is designed to help you implement established dog training techniques that reward both owner and dog. This positive approach to dog training is an easy, simple, and fun way to help develop real-world canine manners and enhance your everyday relationship with your dog.
