Weekly Update from Dogwise: Between Dog and Wolf |
|
Dear Dogwise Customer,
Dogwise Publishing is pleased to announce the release of Between Dog and Wolf - Understanding the Connection and the Confusion by Jessica Addams and Andrew Miller. This book is a little bit different animal (pun intended!) from what we normally publish so a little extra background is called for. Ray Coppinger (see below) contacted us about a year ago to tell us about two researchers at Wolf Park in Indiana who were compiling their experiences helping people determine just what kind of canine they had in their possession in cases where it was no clear whether it was a dog, a wolf, or some type of hybrid. He wondered whether we would consider publishing a manuscript based on their work adding he thought it was very informative and well written. Well right away this idea had two good things going for it: an endorsement from Coppinger; and a subject that has become increasingly popular in recent years, i.e., the relationship between wolves and dogs.
One year later "we have a book" as we like to say. Authors Jessica Addams and Andrew Miller have written one of the most interesting and, we dare say, entertaining books you dog enthusiasts are apt to read this year. Their original goal was to help shelter workers, rescue organizations, and folks who are likely to try to adopt any stray canine they come across to know how to identify what they have in their possession to the extent that it is possible to do so (hint: its not always possible). And they provide lots of insights into helping people make such identifications. But what should make this book so interesting to a wider audience is that in order to ID an unknown canine, you need to know a lot about the physical and behavioral characteristics of wolves (and understand what is fact vs. myth) as well as the physical and behavioral characteristics of dogs, along with how dogs evolved from wolves, the process of domestication, and something about genetics. With so much misinformation in books, on TV, and on-line about wolves and dogs, the authors have done a real service to people wanting to know more about the variety of canines in the world today. We think you will really enjoy this book along with the incredible color photos of wolves, dogs, and hyrbrids.
