Weekly Update from Dogwise: Mental Fitness |
|
Dear Dogwise Customer,
More and more dog folks are coming to the realization that keeping your dog mentally fit through the use of games and toys has many benefits for both dogs and their humans. While almost everyone agrees with the old adage that "a tired dog is a good dog," you may not always be in a position to give your dog a chance to exercise physically - owners have to leave their dogs alone for several hours at a time, the weather may not cooperate, your dog may be at point in her life where significant physical exercise is just not feasible anymore. Since the introduction of items like the Buster Cube many years ago, there has been a rapid expansion of toys and games designed to keep dogs mentally challenged and happily occupied. Here are some great product ideas you might wish you had next time you get several feet of snow:
- Any of the products from Nina Ottosson (click here for a complete list). Two of the more popular ones are the Dog Tornado game and the Dog Pyramid treat release tool. The Dog Pyramid is our Product of the Week through January 19th, 20% off at $15.99.
- Kibble Nibble Treat Balls available in large and small sizes.
- Treat Stik treat dispensing toy. Named 2007 Gear of the Year by the Whole Dog Journal.
Along the same line are books that focus on getting you to get your dog to have to use her brain. Most good new training books usually have a chapter or two on this subject. Two that have a focus on it are:
Newest books & products:
- Anatomy of the Dog - In Straight Forward Terms by Kerstin Mielke. A wonderful introduction into the anatomy of a dog using color photos and graphics with some interesting physiological facts thrown in here and there. There is a list of technical terms and their scientific equivalents at the end of the book, and detailed drawings help explain each area of the anatomy of the dog.
- More Fun With Clicker Training by Monika Gutmann. Includes an introduction to target training using ground targets and target sticks along with bridging signals, transferring behaviors and reward/treat selection.
- Dog INC - The Uncanny Inside Story of Cloning Mans Best Friend by John Woestendiek. A fascinating and thought provoking read into not only the physical and monetary aspects of cloning our best friend, but the ever increasing emotional expectations we now load upon their backs. Strangely intriguing - like having to turn your head to sneak a peak at a car wreck.
