Weekly Update: Canine Nutrigenomics

Dear Dogwise Customer,

Dogwise Publishing is very pleased to announce the release of Canine Nutrigenomics - The New Science of Feeding Your Dog for Optimum Health by Jean Dodds, DVM and Diana Laverdure. We normally send out only one newsletter a week, but as the book just arrived today we didn't want to sit on the good news for another week!

You might be asking yourself what is nutrigenomics? Nutrigenomics (a combination of the words nutrition and genome) is the study of how the foods we and our pets eat “speak” to our cells to regulate gene expression, which in turn plays a huge role in determining whether a person or animal will live a life of vibrant health, or one plagued by illness. While every person and dog is born with a unique set of genes, how these genes express themselves and send messages to cells can be impacted by the environment including by the foods that are consumed. What are termed "functional foods" are those that promote health; foods that have negative effects on gene expression - resulting in disease, allergies, and inflammation - are to be avoided. Scientists have also discovered that the changes in gene expression caused by the foods consumed by a dog can actually be passed on to future generations, so the decisions you make can be long term indeed. The good news is that while we can’t change the genes we are born with, we can change how those genes behave through nutrition.

The book focuses on identifying functional foods in detail to include in your dog's diet. You will learn how to choose the right type and mix of proteins, fats and carbohydrates along with supplements. Ten "canine superfoods" are also identified and how they can supercharge your dog’s health by optimizing his gene expression. Once a "nutrigenomic based diet" is established, the authors detail how to use functional ingredients based on your dog's age and activity level as well as how they can treat, manage and even reverse a wide variety of chronic canine health conditions. The citations and bibliography are very extensive for those who want to review the scientific research supporting the book.

One other fact you need to be aware of. Not all dogs react to foods the same way - after all, every dog has its own unique genes. One dog may thrive on chicken while another dog may have a negative reaction to it. While you might by trial and error reach that conclusion yourself, NutriScan - developed and offered exclusively by the Hemolife testing laboratory founded by author Jean Dodds - is a simple saliva best test you can undertake and get detailed results in about two weeks showing how your dog reacts to a wide variety of foods. Details on how this works and sample reports are included in the book.

We would like to thank both Jean and Diana for their dedication to improving the health of dogs and all the hard work they put into bringing all this important information into this new book!

A quick note for those of you still waiting for Jane Killion's Puppy Culture DVD set. We were overwhelmed with orders and are working with Jane to get more stock to us as quickly as possible - so hang in there!
