Weekly Update from Dogwise: Canine Cross Training by Sasha Foster

Dear Dogwise Customer,

Dogwise Publishing is pleased to announce the release of Canine Cross Training - Building Balance, Strength and Endurance in Your Dog by Sasha Foster. Cross training has become very popular with human athletes who have learned the hard way that focusing on only one component of training and neglecting others often means they come up short in competitions. Canine athletes as well need to focus on training that will build balance, strength and endurance, and this is the focus of this new book by Sasha Foster, co-author of the popular The Healthy Way to Stretch Your Dog. Canine cross training, to be done successfully, needs to be systematic and the exercises chosen need to be appropriate for the dog, based on fitness level and what type of sport you plan to have your dog engage in. The book explains how the dog can be tested in terms of balance, strength and endurance so he can begin his exercise program at the proper level. Once that is determined then the dog can progress through exercise levels that become increasingly challenging. The book also shows how you can train your dog through shaping to become comfortable around the type of equipment used (wobble boards, exercise balls, etc.). Who will benefit from this book? The dogs, of course, even though there is no guarantee that your Basset Hound will be a competitive dock diver! The book is also designed to be a manual for people who are interested in the fields of canine conditioning and canine rehabilitation in which Sasha is involved professionally.

Interested in exploring this subject more? Check out The Healthy Way to Stretch Your Dog book or The Healthy Way to Stretch Your Dog DVD for stretching routines that can be used to augment your cross training efforts. Chris Zink and Laurie McCauley's Building the Canine Athlete DVD is another good choice to see exercise routines in action.

We heard you! While at the APDT Conference we had requests for ebook/book combos. We have started with our most popular book On Talking Terms with Dogs by Turid Rugaas. Let us know what you think!

Newest books & products:

  • In A Dog's Heart - A Compassionate Guide to Canine Care, From Adopting to Teaching to Bonding by Jennifer Arnold. Arnold has come to a unique understanding of the human-dog bond over the two decades she has spent raising and training service dogs for Canine Assistants. She developed a methodology—Choice Teaching—that pairs scientific and behavioral knowledge about dogs with gentle incentive and encouragement to extraordinary effect.
  • When Your Dog has Cancer - Making the Right Decisions for You and Your Dog by Lola Ball. In this important book, author Ball provides answers to the question of what you the owner can do and what your alternatives are if your dog is struck by cancer. The most important first steps are to arm yourself with knowledge about the different types of cancers, medicines, treatment alternatives and prognoses.
