Weekly Update from Dogwise: Handling Skills for Agility

Dear Dogwise Customer,

You may have noticed last week at the bottom of our weekly newsletter we slipped in a mention of Linda Mecklenburg's new book called Developing Handling Skills for Awesome Agility Teams. It ended up there only because it arrived just moments before we hit the send button to send out the emails. This is a book worthy of much more attention - which we are happy to give it - as it is probably one of the most important new books in the field of agility to be published in a long time. The focus of this book is on you the handler and how important it is that when you are handling your dog on the course that you move appropriately and give your dog the right kind of natural cues to maximize her performance. Remember, you are a team and you have to play your part as well to make things work. This is a fabulous book with an extensive number of diagrams and photos to guide you through the course.

We have a tremendous selection of agility books and DVDs in stock right now that can help build your skills whether you are an experienced competitor or a novice. We know its hard to think about agility with most of the country buried in snow right now, but it will be spring before you know it. A couple of notable books that continue to sell well are:
Our Book of the Week has been in print for many years, but like the Mecklenburg book focused on developing handling skills in a dog performance sport. Successful Obedience Handling by Barbara Handler focuses on what you as a handler needs to know and do in the Obedience ring. Sometimes we focus so much on the dog that we forget how important the handler can be. On sale this week at 20% off, only $9.56.

Our product feature this week is Dog Agility Coiled Leash Tabs. "Tabs" are mini-leashes are primarily used for helping to control and guide your dog between agility obstacles or just plain handy for any type of training when you need quick control. They stay attached to your dog's collar and don't get tangled up while running the obstacles or while working off leash.

Newest books & products:

  • Dachshunds - Barrons Dog Bible with DVD by D. Caroline Coile. Canine expert D. Caroline Coile describes the Dachshund's physical traits, history, and behavior characteristics, and instructs you on training your new pet.
  • Cassius - The Story of A Courageous Police Dog by Gordon Thorburn. The story of Cassius (GSD) is by turns thrilling, funny, and moving, and always a fascinating insight into the freemasonry of police dog training "from the other side of the pond".
  • Drawing Realistic Pets From Photographs by Lee Hammond. Turn your candid snapshots into remarkable artwork that truly captures the personality of your cherished pets. In Drawing Realistic Pets From Photographs you'll find foolproof instruction that will have you creating impressive drawings in no time.
