Dogwise Publishing is very pleased to announce the release of Sue Sternberg's Assessing Aggression Thresholds in Dogs - Using the Assess-A-Pet Protocol to Better Understand Aggression. As most of you know, Sue Sternberg has devoted much of her professional life to working with dogs and providing shelter workers and dog trainers with the means by which to better assess/predict aggressive behaviors. Her Assess-A-Pet protocol has been used all over the world for many years. Sue has been updating and revising her protocols to address the trend that a higher percentage of the dogs in shelters and rescues can now be characterized as more likely to engage in aggressive and other behavioral problems than in the past.
Assessing Aggression Thresholds contains very detailed step-by-step procedures on how to test dogs in four major areas (Cage Presentation, Sociability, Resource Guarding, and Dog-Dog Aggression) and a number of other tests that may apply to a specific adoption situation (reactions to teeth exams, children, cats, strangers). The Sociability tests - which tend to have the most predictive power - are covered in detail along with information on what constitutes sociable behavior and how to recognize it.
Sue has also included a new chapter for dog trainers and behavior consultants on how to apply the protocols to in-home situations. This can keep the trainer safe, especially when encountering a dog for the first time and help the trainer develop a training plan. Lastly, Chapter 8 includes an essay on what Sue terms the "Trinity" - The Dog, Owner and the Environment. This essay recognizes that no matter how skillfully an assessment is done, the success of the adopted dog and the new owner depends on what happens in the future. The dog owner can't always control the dog's behavior and can't always control the environment, but an owner(s) can increase the likelihood of success by doing a number of things that so many of you already do, but can never mention too often to your clients!
If you are in the Denver, Colorado area, Claudia Fugazza author of Do As I Do will be doing a seminar on social learning that will be held on February 18th and 19th. You can find out more information here.
