Fear in dogs, which can manifest itself in many ways (biting, barking, submissive urination, emotional breakdowns, running away, and more) is one of the trickier problems trainers and behaviorists face when working with clients. It also can be caused by a number of factors - some of which the dog is forced to face time and again (thunderstorms, rambunctious dogs encountered on a daily walk, strange people). A lot of dogs also store memories of negative encounters. When they experience the same type of encounter again, dogs can be seen to react fearfully, even over a long period of time. One of our former resident dogs at Dogwise, who was adopted at about age two and was probably about as friendly and laid-back of a dog as you can imagine, would erupt with a bout of fear barking with hackles up every time the meter reader came to the warehouse. Our two meter readers (always in a hurry), barge in the front door without warning, announce themselves loudly ("meter reader!"), and are both relatively young men wearing baseball caps. Obviously our nice mild-mannered dog remembered something similar that triggered this behavior again and again! Fortunately we have a wide variety of books on fear, both for the average owner and for the professional. Here are some of our top picks:
