Dogwise Publishing is very pleased to announce the release of Dog Food Logic Making Smart Decisions for your Dog in an Age of Too Many Choices by Linda Case. Linda is an expert in canine nutrition, having written and lectured on the subject for years as well as being a dog trainer and a competitor with her dogs in various canine competitions. We began our discussions over a year ago with Linda about a book that would help owners make good decisions about selecting the right foods for their dogs given that there has been an incredible expansion in the number of food choices facing the consumer today. Just walk down the aisle of a pet superstore and count the number of choices: beef, chicken, lamb, salmon, vegetarian, gluten free, organic, puppy food, adult food, even breed specific foods! Makes you wonder how any dog survived 50 years ago when the number of choices were so limited and the package told you that it was the only food your dog needed for his entire life.
Dog Food Logic does not make specific food recommendations. What Linda does in the book, however, is give you the information and analytical skills you need to be able to make your own logical and scientifically valid decisions based on the evidence. The first step is to look at yourself. People have to make decisions given a wide range of choices all the time - just think of the food choices you make for yourself, for example. Most of us take mental shortcuts to make complex decisions - we decide to follow the recommendations of who we perceive to be experts, or friends, or even our favorite celebrities. Or we decide, logically or not, to only buy food for ourselves and our dogs which has packaging proclaiming that all the ingredients are "natural" - whatever that means. The second step is to distinguish between anecdotal evidence (which abounds in the
world of dog food) and scientific evidence and how to research and understand the latter. The third step is to learn about the ingredients and nutrients that go into dog food. What are the characteristics that make a food that works well for puppies vs senior dogs? Are there things you need to know if your dog is actively engaged in canine sports? And fourthly is to learn how to read the labels that are required to be on a package of dog food and how to evaluate the claims that are on the packaging. What does it really means when a package proclaims that the food is "made with salmon," "organic," or "promotes a glossy coat."
This book will make you think and presents a large amount of information for you to digest (no pun intended!). It does not promise any quick or easy answers because, quite frankly, there are not any. But putting in the time and effort to learn what is required to make good buying decisions for your dog is worth it, don't you agree? And you may find that what you learn you can also apply to your own food intake and nutrition - a nice bonus!
