Weekly Update from Dogwise: The Thinking Dog by Gail Fisher |
|
Dear Dogwise Customer,
|
Dogwise Publishing is pleased to announce the publication and release of The Thinking Dog - Crossover to Clicker Training by Gail Fisher. Many of you may know Gail through her training operation in New Hampshire, her previous books, and now as a board member of APDT. We hope Gail doesn't mind us saying this, but she is old enough to have lived and worked as a trainer for a long time - starting in the era when Bill Koelher's books topped the dog training best seller lists through the change to lure/reward training methods and then more recently to methods associated with operant conditioning like clicker training. So when Gail approached us over a year ago with a proposal to write a book on how to help trainers (and their dogs!) make a successful transition to clicker training, we knew she had the experience and credibility to do it. One of the biggest obstacles to becoming an effective clicker trainer is your own previous training method history and the experience your dog may have had with them - not that they were necessarily ineffective, wrong or "bad," just different. If your dog has been trained to wait for a command rather than rewarded for offering behaviors (i.e., the "thinking dog"), then what you need to do to crossover to clicker training will be different than with a dog who has no history of training at all or has been subjected to compulsion. It is the focus on the interrelationships between various training methods and history that make this book so unique and useful because almost everyone has to learn to train a different way to achieve the goal of having a thinking dog - one who engages proactively with you as you build your relationship with your dog.
Also new this week The Safe Dog Handbook by Melanie Monteiro. This is a very useful book in that it focuses on keeping your dog (especially puppies) safe through management techniques and ideas. We often forget that management is the simplest and least expensive way to prevent safety oriented problems in the first place - but if things do go wrong, it has the first aid and medical information you need to know. A really nice addition to the literature on caring for dogs.
Thanks from all of us at Dogwise.
